Clear-eyed passionate love letter to Hawai’i

As the story unfurls across three generations of Hawaiian women, it leaves the reader agape at the injustice perpetuated against this island nation - but worst is how blood lineage requirements eats at families, communities and the idea of who belongs or not despite sharing the same passion and love for Hawaiian heritage and culture. I came away with new knowledge and a desire to learn more about Hawai’i no matter my Nordic roots. I loved how the story wove in the voices of the larger community, adding to the rich tapestry of the narrative. Above all I felt bound to the women whose fierceness and stubbornness both amused and exasperated me. It’s a great book. Very different and worthwhile.

Thoughtful and well argued ideas that could change how we engage in politics and each other

Good ideas, succinctly argued with a good balance between new thinking and pragmatism. For a European the new social contract is a no-brainer, but implementing this approach in the current climate would require visionary leaders with long term faith in our collective futures. Really recommend this book.

An education for the modern world

I’m already a fan of Karen Armstrong’s work but I had missed this essential piece of reading. Like other reviewers I was stunned to realize that the book was published in paperback years ago because the material feels new and highly relevant for our understanding of the conservative (religious) movements across different faiths around the world today. It has given me new historical and necessary insights into different world views. I highly recommend this to a reader interested in having a better understanding of the world today.
