Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize - winning biography, Barbara Tuchman explores American relations with China through the experiences of one of our men on the ground. In the cantankerous but level-headed "Vinegar Joe", Tuchman found a subject who allowed her to perform, in the words of the National Review, "one of the historian's most envied magic acts: conjoining a fine biography of a man with a fascinating epic story."

Excellent history

This is a great story of Stillwell’s experience in China. It might be a wee bit biased in his favor but it’s definitely an outstanding work and well narrated.

Historia
Ghostriders: Mors De Caelis is a comprehensive history of AC-130 gunship combat operations in Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The story begins with the first AC-130 in 1968, and ends in 1975 at the end of the war in Vietnam. It tells the life and death stories of Spectre crews, who faced extreme danger while hunting trucks on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and providing fire support for US and allied ground forces.

Historia
Relive six decades of flying helicopters, including an extended tour in Vietnam and the mountains of Afghanistan, with a little Iraq, Kuwait, and National Guard thrown in. This is Minuteman: Two, Three…Go! recounts Wayne Chasson’s times, from the early, young, and dumb days to becoming a more seasoned pilot of Huey and other helicopters in three American wars and the National Guard here at home. Chasson relives it all for us in this gritty and honest memoir — with humility, humor, and gratitude — as he himself is still trying to figure out how he made it through alive.

Not sure about the reader’s pronunciation of brigade but the stories were good, some sad, and the narrator did an otherwise good job.

Tired drivel
Revisado: 01-11-22
What a load of insufferable drivel. I Stopped before the end of the third chapter where the author posses the rhetorical question, after saying subliminal racism whatever that is exactly was behind the bombings in Asia, “Would we have undertaken our bombing policy if the enemy were white?” The answer is yes we would have. Does the author not remember how many Germans burned to death in multi thousand ship bombings raids in Europe? The difference is the Germans surrendered. Dehumanization of the enemy is something everyone does. The Vietnamese called the Americans apes. So what? It’s not the basic cause of policy, “subliminal” “unconscious” or otherwise.
The author asserts the reason North Korea won’t come to terms with the West is because we killed so many north Korean citizens. That’s it, apparently.
The author states that Kennedy was a victim of McCarthy and red baiting and implies that he was powerless to not act against North Viet Nam. I think he’s read too much Halberstam.
Book looked promising and I suspect there’s good technical content but I couldn’t stand the nonsensical assertions any longer.

Historia
During the Vietnam War, a “secret war” was fought across the fence in Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam, unknown to the media or the public, under the aegis of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam’s top secret Studies and Observations Group. SOG’s chain of command for missions and after-action reports extended to the White House and the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Historia
An American Combat Bird Dog Pilot is a compelling look at the life and times of a member of the Silent Generation. Mike Leonard’s story chronicles not only his breathtaking combat adventures, but the unforeseen perils that nearly sidetracked him during his time as an international sales executive. This spellbinding narrative paints a vivid portrait of a man, as the Chinese proverb clearly states, "living in interesting times".

Great life story
Revisado: 08-07-21
I downloaded this book because of my interest in Vietnam history. There was actually not all that much about Vietnam in it but rather an overall recounting of the author’s life, part of which includes his time in Vietnam. A good part of the content was about his life in the space satellite business, which I found interesting since I’m in that business as well. So for me the book covered multiple personal interests.
The story was well written and the narrator (author) has a good voice for it. However, and this is a big however, the audio needs to be edited to cut out corrections and re-reads. The narrator would mess up a sentence or get tongue tied and start over on a paragraph. This is extremely disruptive to the flow of the story. I understand it happening but it could have and should have been edited to cut out those corrections.
I also think I would like to meet the author’s wife. I love his references to her thoughts and ideas. She sounds like a no nonsense kind of person.

Historia
Sometimes you do everything right, but it just isn't your day. A part fails and your helicopter comes apart in flight, or, another aircraft runs into you and the pieces of both fall to the ground below, or the enemy gunner pulls the trigger at just the right moment and his rounds find your aircraft in exactly the right spot to take it out of the sky. Whichever way it happens, it wasn't your day.

Thoroughly entertained!
Revisado: 09-03-19
The book is a series of notable stories that sample various points in time along the author's career as an aircraft pilot. Being a fixed wing and aspiring rotary pilot I found the stories entertaining and the anecdotes useful and sometimes quite funny. This is one I will likely listen to again.

Historia
By the spring of 1970, American troops were ordered to pull out of Vietnam. The Marines of First Reconnaissance Battalion, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel "Wild Bill" Drumright, were assigned to cover the withdrawal of First Marine Division. The Marines of First RECON Bn operated in teams of six or seven men. Heavily armed, the teams fought a multitude of bitter engagements with a numerically superior and increasingly aggressive enemy. Michael C. Hodgins served in Company C, First RECON Bn (Rein), as a platoon leader. In powerful, graphic prose, he chronicles his experience.

This story is not flashy. It's not overly heroic or gripping even. What it is, or what it feels like I should say, is very honest and real. This is definitely one of my favorite accounts of the war.

John Plaster’s riveting account of his covert activities as a member of a special operations team during the Vietnam War is “a true insider’s account...this eye-opening report will leave readers feeling as if they’ve been given a hot scoop on a highly classified project” (Publishers Weekly). Code-named the Studies and Observations Group, SOG was the most secret elite US military unit to serve in the Vietnam War - so secret that its very existence was denied by the government.

Revisado: 04-16-19
This is a very well done book and is quite interesting. It paints a much broader and clearer picture of the actions of SOG than is given in most of the one-sided accounts. It's not all ra-ra nonsense but a balance of what they did right and what they did wrong and what it cost them. I would definitely recommend this audiobook.

Historia
In the Vietnam War, 2,197 helicopter pilots and 2,717 crew members were killed. Black Cat 2-1 is the story of one pilot who made it home and the valiant men he served with who risked their lives for the troops on the ground. Bob Ford invites listeners into the Huey helicopters he flew on more than 1,000 missions when he and his men dared to protect and rescue. For those whose voices were silenced in that faraway place or who have never told their stories, he creates a tribute that plays like a thriller, captures the humor of men at war, and resounds with respect for those who served with honor.

Very enjoyable listen
Revisado: 04-16-19
First, it was really good to hear the author serve as the narrator. I suppose this isn't always a good idea but I liked it and Mr. Ford did quite well.
The story itself is very interesting and well told. I don't recall having seen or read any stories by pilots specifically in and out of Hue, especially in '68, so it was good to have that bit of void filled.
I do have to wonder, is Mr. Ford really as straight-laced as he seems?
