Historia
In a sweeping synthesis of new research in a number of different disciplines, this book argues that we humans are not who we think we are. As he explores the interconnections between cutting-edge work in bioanthropology, evolutionary biology, neuroscience, human language and learning, and beyond, James Paul Gee advances, also, a personal philosophy of language, learning, and culture, informed by his decades of work across linguistics and the social sciences.

Example after example in this unique classic—from "Strongheart" the actor-dog to "Freddie" the fly—resounds with entertaining and inspiring proof that communication with animals is a wonderful, indisputable fact. All that is required is an attitude of openness, friendliness, humility, and a sense of humor to part the curtain and form bonds of real friendship.

Part philosophy, part memoir, part tips of the trade
Revisado: 04-03-24
A well-rounded and well-narrated treatise on acting, its philosophical aspects, practices, and one actor’s experience with the craft.
Through anecdotes and tips (both personal and acquired over an extensive career) Mr Davis takes the reader on a journey allowing them a glimpse behind the mask.
Though not an actor myself, I still found this book interesting for the simple fact that I can better appreciate cinema, TV, and theater actors by learning a little bit about the effort that goes into breathing life into the characters written in the script.

Historia
More than 20 years after Dr. Thomas Armstrong's Myth of the A.D.D. Child first published, he presents much needed updates and insights in this substantially revised edition. When The Myth of the A.D.D. Child was first published in 1995, Dr. Thomas Armstrong made the controversial argument that many behaviors labeled as ADD or ADHD are simply a child's active response to complex social, emotional, and educational influences. In this fully revised and updated edition, Dr. Armstrong shows listeners how to address the underlying causes of a child's attention and behavior problems.

Historia
Widely praised and winner of the 2023 Gilder Lehrman Lincoln Prize, this book illuminates why Lincoln’s unprecedented welcoming of African American men and women to the White House transformed the trajectory of race relations in the United States. From his 1862 meetings with Black Christian ministers, Lincoln began inviting African Americans of every background into his home, from ex-slaves from the Deep South to champions of abolitionism such as Frederick Douglass and Sojourner Truth.

Myriad narrators bring history to life and flesh out an American legend with quotes from his contemporaries!
Revisado: 03-08-24
An easily accessible historical account narrated by multiple individuals; full of quotes of contemporaries of Abraham Lincoln that record the fledgling Union as it wrestles with its limited interpretation of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness for all men who are created equal. A timely book, as some of the racist sentiments are echoed in actions and words of the living in this great nation. Jonathan White uncovers accounts and facts I'd never read or heard about before. A powerful read for anyone wanting to better understand the foundation of dissent between the North and the South. The variety of narrators lending voices to the quotes helped bring this text to life.

Peace through understanding and love
Revisado: 03-06-24
Good narration despite the challenge; the narrator had to get creative with so many new characters this time around. Variety of effects and registers make it easier to keep all the new entities straight.
The second in a series, 'The Horses Know' drops you right into multiple story elements that don't ever quite congeal. Once again, Lynn Mann waxes poetic about horses; describing various riding maneuvers in a way only a horse-aficionado can fully appreciate in characteristic wordy manner. Dialogue is realistic and flows well and romance doesn't take away from the story. Woeful race history is expanded upon and characters explored. Resolution in tension feels rushed and not fully developed, but will surely still be plenty entertaining for teen readers. I'm not as impressed with this book as the first, but hold out hope for the final installment of the trilogy.

Magical female protagonist evolves with assistance of horse spirit guide in dystopian future fantasy.
Revisado: 03-05-24
This dystopian fantasy takes a little while to get into. Set in an alternate future where civilization has nearly decimated itself and nature, 'The Horses Know' ties in mystical and fantasy elements. Strong female protagonist Amarilla develops as her bond to her horse strengthens and she matures with her peers. At times a bit long-winded, Lynn Mann paints a detailed world both without and within. A great read for tweens and teens who like horses or fantasy. Themes of self-actualization, working out conflicts through discussion, and acceptance of others' differences abound.

Revisado: 03-03-24
A heartwarming account of instances of animal altruism. Given how rough the 2020-2022 time period has been, this collection of examples of cross-species assistance gives me warm fuzzies. This second book of Belinda Recio is just as fascinating and informative as her first book 'Inside Animal Hearts and Minds'. Stories of altruistic behaviors across species include birds, canines, elephants, porpoises, and primates, An informative feel-good listen.

Historia
As Charles Darwin suggested more than a century ago, the differences between animals and humans are of degree and not of kind. Not long ago, ethologists denied that animals had emotions or true intelligence. Now, we know that rats laugh when tickled, magpies mourn as they cover the departed with greenery, female whales travel thousands of miles for annual reunions with their gal pals, seals navigate by the stars, bears hum when happy, and crows slide down snowy rooftops for fun.
