Historia
Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

Amazing, impactful, unforgettable
Revisado: 04-25-24
Wow. Jennette does an incredible job unpacking her childhood and adolescence through the eyes and brain of an adult. She lays bare the complex and nuanced relationship with her mom (and dad and others) that is relatable even if the details are different. Thought provoking, hard to hear at times, but also interestingly hopeful all at the same time. Thank you Jennette for your vulnerability. It couldn’t have been easy to write but wow - the impact.

Historia
Rachel Held Evans is widely recognized for her theologically astute, profoundly honest, and beautifully personal books, which have guided, instructed, edified, and shaped Christians as they seek to live out a just and loving faith. At the time of her tragic death in 2019, Rachel was working on a new book about wholeheartedness. With the help of her close friend and author Jeff Chu, that work-in-progress has been woven together with some of her other unpublished writings into a rich collection of essays.

Exactly what my heart needed
Revisado: 12-31-22
Oh my goodness. This book was amazing. Rachel’s way with words combined with insight into Scripture is refreshing and freeing. I will be listening to this book again and again to let it soak in. What a beautiful tribute to the late author, to have her close friends and family read chapters. The whole thing was wonderful.

Like therapy for the soul
Revisado: 06-05-22
As a fellow 40-something mom of boys, raised in the church, hurt at times by the church, navigating what I believe and what I’m re-thinking, lover of good food and cooking, and lover of NYC, this book was like therapy for the soul. It was affirming, challenging, and inspiring. Shauna’s storytelling is on point and unearths so much of daily life that often goes unnoticed and unappreciated. I am left excited to continue experiencing life in all the ways - the messy, the hard, the mundane and the delightful. Thank you Shauna for putting so much of my feelings about similar experiences into words. <3
