Historia
A globe shows the world we think we know: neatly delineated sovereign nations that grant or restrict their citizens’ rights. Beneath, above, and tucked inside their borders, however, another universe has been engineered into existence. It consists of thousands of extraterritorial zones that operate largely autonomously, and increasingly for the benefit of the wealthiest individuals and corporations. Atossa Abrahamian traces the rise of this hidden globe to thirteenth-century Switzerland, where poor cantons marketed their only commodity.

Enlightening new material
Revisado: 01-19-25
Ms. Abrahamian plows through amazing and new material about renegade states around the world. Fascinating. She is a very refined writer, making it a pleasure. I gave the performance 3 stars for turning over a woman's tale to a male narrator.

Historia
When Newton discovered the law of gravity, he unified the rules governing the heavens and the Earth. Since then, physicists have been placing new forces into ever-grander theories. But perhaps the ultimate challenge is achieving a monumental synthesis of the two remaining theories—relativity and the quantum theory. This would be the crowning achievement of science, a profound merging of all the forces of nature into one beautiful, magnificent equation to unlock the deepest mysteries in science: What happened before the Big Bang?

Breathtaking
Revisado: 08-25-24
Very difficult subject told for the common person's consumption. Thought-provoking. Parts were difficult, but that's the nature of the subject.

Historia
On January 20, 2003, a thunderous crack rang out and a 100-foot-wide tide of snow barreled down the Northern Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia, Canada. More than a dozen skiers and snowboarders were thrust down the mountain, buried beneath several tons of rock-hard snow and ice in the Durrand Glacier Avalanche. A heroic search and rescue ensued. Among those buried was Craig Kelly—“the Michael Jordan of snowboarding”—a man who had propelled the sport into the mainstream before walking away from competitions, to rekindle his passion in the untamed alpine wilds of North America

Avalanche Tragedy
Revisado: 04-15-24
I got this based on the NYT review. But I found it a bit tedious, going into detail about each snowboarding venture. The writing is good and the narration excellent, but it lacked drama. The main character goes around the world helicopter-boarding on virgin snow. It's never explained how he can afford to do this terribly self-indulgent "sport". And the "science" of avalanches is obviously quite flawed and subject to the personalities of egotistical boarders. Though well-crafted, it left me a bit unsatisfied.

Historia
On September 11, 1999, humanity made a monumental discovery in the vastness of space. Scientists uncovered an asteroid of immense scientific importance—a colossal celestial entity. As massive as an aircraft carrier and towering as high as the iconic Empire State Building, this cosmic titan was later named Bennu. Remarkable for much more than its size, Bennu belonged to a rare breed of asteroids capable of revealing the essence of life itself. But just as Bennu became a beacon of promise, researchers identified a grave danger.

Well-written scientific venture
Revisado: 04-06-24
This was well-written. A breathtaking scientific venture by this author. At times it got a bit dry and detailed which took away some of the drama. And late in the story the reader forgets some important details told early-on that would have been helpful to mention again: like size of the asteroid, atmosphere, distance away, temperature etc. The story had a few (for me) annoying interspersed voice-overs that were to reveal some bold new science--that sounded like some distant Shakespearean actor in a tunnel.

Nice In-Depth Investigation
Revisado: 01-28-24
Renner does a great job of getting into the Everglades to explore this tale of alligator poachers. She is a good writer and exposes the atrocities destroying the flora and fauna in the unique region of the Everglades. We learn a lot about alligators and poaching in general. I would say she far exceeds the highly-honored Susan Orleans who does the same type of story. I was puzzled as to why the narration was done by a man.

Historia
For millennia, owls have captivated and intrigued us. Our fascination with these mysterious birds was first documented more than thirty thousand years ago in the Chauvet Cave paintings in southern France. With their forward gaze and quiet flight, owls are often a symbol of wisdom, knowledge, and foresight. But what does an owl really know? And what do we really know about owls? Jennifer Ackerman illuminates the rich biology and natural history of these birds and reveals remarkable new scientific discoveries about their brains and behavior.

A Guy on Overdrive
Revisado: 05-03-23
The book is overpacked with health information, stuff we can find in numerous books. He is a health nut who is obsessed--about proving how great he is and who I surmised would be impossible to live with. In the end, in a very honest confession, these prove to be true. At one point in the last pages he discovers the joy of a simple walk with his kids in the park. Only took him 50 years to get to that revelation. I give him credit for his honesty, but it's what's not in the pages is the true lesson: life doesn't have to be so utterly difficult. It should be retitled: The Ravages of an Overachiever.
