Terrible Narration
Revisado: 09-05-24
I had to stop and return this book because the narration was terrible. Women and men alike…cringe worthy. Particularly the man’s voice sounding like Vincent Price-which is a great choice for some books, but so wrong here. Too bad because I wanted to find out what happens.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

Historia
In late 2003, in his column in Entertainment Weekly, Stephen King called The Memory of Running "the best novel you won't read this year." This glowing endorsement of the audiobook resulted in Ron McLarty receiving a $2 million two-book deal from Viking Penguin. Also, Warner Brothers has shelled out big bucks for the movie rights to The Memory of Running, for which McLarty will write the script.

This book was quirky but enjoyable. Smithy Ide was an interesting character to get to know - he really grew on me. The narration by the author was fantastic!

Acclaimed author Jonathan Rosen’s haunting investigation of the forces that led his closest childhood friend, Michael Laudor, from the heights of brilliant promise to the forensic psychiatric hospital where he has lived since killing the woman he loved. A story about friendship, love, and the price of self-delusion, The Best Minds explores the ways in which we understand—and fail to understand—mental illness.

A history of mental illness
Revisado: 03-05-24
We've all known someone who has suffered with mental illness and this book does a beautiful job relaying the experience of the author. There were also many things I learned about the history of caring for the mentally ill in America. Questioning how will we care for them moving forward? A tragic, beautiful story. Well done.

Good - not great
Revisado: 03-05-24
This book was good, not great. I loved the subject and was very interested in learning more about the women who served in Vietnam. Unfortunately the author decided to take it in a chick lit direction. Parts of this book were so good and so riveting but other parts were totally cheesy, predictable and sophomoric. Kristin Hannah does a great job describing the horrors of the war, but unfortunately the other parts of this character's life felt weak and contrived. When I realized that this was by the author of The Nightingale, it all made perfect sense to me. Thousands loved that book giving it rave reviews. I found it totally unbelievable and again too "harlequin romantic" for my taste. Same with this book, fantastic reviews, for a so-so book. Have most people not read really good literature? I also felt like the narrator was far too dramatic adding to the cheesy feel. I kept thinking it would have been a better read than listen. I will however listen to some of the books the author recommended on the same subject.

Historia
Lidia Yuknavitch has an unmatched gift for capturing stories of people on the margins—vulnerable humans leading lives of challenge and transcendence. Now, Yuknavitch offers an imaginative masterpiece: the story of Laisvė, a motherless girl from the late 21st century who is learning her power as a carrier, a person who can harness the power of meaningful objects to carry her through time. Sifting through the detritus of a fallen city known as the Brook, she discovers a talisman that will mysteriously connect her with a series of characters from the past two centuries.

Interesting listen. I love Lidia’s writing. The imagery in this book is magical. It kept me hanging on. However, the story was just too quirky for me.

This sprawling and often brutal novel, set in the rich farmlands of California's Salinas Valley, follows the intertwined destinies of two families - the Trasks and the Hamiltons - whose generations helplessly reenact the fall of Adam and Eve and the poisonous rivalry of Cain and Abel.

Amazing Classic
Revisado: 02-10-24
Amazing listen…Steinbeck works magic with words and the narrator was fabulous. Sweeping generational saga. As with many classics, it’s interesting to compare the times in which it was written, to the times we are living. While I love Steinbeck’s prose, this book is filled with patriarchy and racism. Poor Kate. After completing the book, I immediately watched the 1955 film by the same name. Barely recognizable. It was probably one of the worst screenplay adaptations ever. Sorry James Dean.

Historia
Raised together in a small German circus town, a boy and an elephant formed a bond that would last their entire lives, and would be tested time and again: through a near-fatal shipwreck in the Indian Ocean, an apprenticeship with the legendary Mahout elephant trainers in the Indian teak forests, and their eventual rise to circus stardom in 1940s New York City. As the African Sun-Times put it, Modoc is "heartwarming...probably the greatest love story ever told".

It was absolutely unbelievable..
Revisado: 11-30-23
I really liked this book. It’s a fantastic story, but absolutely unbelievable. I had to keep reminding myself that this was a true story. Each and every tragedy and triumph was almost too much to believe. I liked the descriptive writing and the narration was good. Well worth the listen. I will always remember Modoc.

I LOVED Cutting for Stone and was so excited for this book. I “suffered” through 7 hours, thinking it would get better. I simply cannot even contemplate 13 more hours of this tedious listen. All due respect to the author but I’m returning this book.

Dumb…just dumb
Revisado: 06-10-23
I honestly can’t believe I listened to this entire book and that it got so many great reviews. Pains me to think that over 50,000 readers thought this was a good book. Poorly written and an irritating, overly dramatic performance. I kept thinking it would get better but this book is simply dumb. Don’t waste your time or money.
