Historia
It’s been 20 years since 9/11, two decades since the United States was attacked on home soil and set out to make the guilty pay with their lives. In the shadows, the enemy has been patient - learning, and adapting. And the enemy is ready to strike again. A new president offers hope to a country weary of conflict. He’s a young, popular, self-made visionary…but he’s also a man with a secret.

Historia
In 1866, with the country barely recovered from the Civil War, new war breaks out on the western frontier - a clash of cultures between a young, ambitious nation and the Native tribes who have lived on the land for centuries. Colonel Henry Carrington arrives in Wyoming’s Powder River Valley to lead the US Army in defending the opening of a new road for gold miners and settlers. Carrington intends to build a fort in the middle of critical hunting grounds, the home of the Lakota.

This book deserves better production
Revisado: 10-24-22
Seriously. Audio abruptly cuts and starts again. Not sure how much was missed. Amateur hour over here. And the main performer as well. I get it. It’s the current zeitgeist. You’ll get cancelled if you don’t cast a native in a book that includes natives. Maybe have him do the native parts and an actual voice actor do the other parts. It was distracting. The story was great and deserved a better production than this.

Historia
February 1862. The Civil War is less than one year old. The fighting has begun in earnest, and the nation has begun to realize it is in for a long, bloody struggle. Meanwhile, President Lincoln’s beloved eleven-year-old son, Willie, lies upstairs in the White House, gravely ill. In a matter of days, despite predictions of a recovery, Willie dies and is laid to rest in a Georgetown cemetery. “My poor boy, he was too good for this earth,” the president says at the time. “God has called him home.”

Despite all the praise, I found it unlistenable
Revisado: 09-12-22
I did a two hour hike with my dog and put this on, excited as I picked it up after reading all the praise heaped upon it. Upon to returning to the car two hours later, I had no idea what was going on. I was completely confused. I could not keep track of the characters and I had not, at that point, identified any direction in which the story might be going. I'm a dumb science person. I'm not a literary person. I mostly prefer non-fiction but I have Audibled my way through a handful of fiction books and enjoyed most of them. Maybe it would have gotten better with more time but I felt like two hours in I should have at least some idea of what the story was going to be and I didn't. So I returned it.
No complaints about the production. It seemed to have been very well done with a lot of recognizable voices.

Historia
The long-awaited new novel from Margaret Atwood. The Year of the Flood is a dystopic masterpiece and a testament to her visionary power. The times and species have been changing at a rapid rate, and the social compact is wearing as thin as environmental stability. Adam One, the kindly leader of the God's Gardeners - a religion devoted to the melding of science and religion, as well as the preservation of all plant and animal life - has long predicted a natural disaster that will alter Earth as we know it. Now it has occurred, obliterating most human life.

Disappointing follow up
Revisado: 09-05-21
It took me a while to get into Onyx and Crake but I’m glad I gave it a shot. It ended up being really good. So obviously I wanted to listen to this one. I’m on Chapter 17 and the annoyingly child like voice of woman as she goes on and on about the day to day life of the Gardeners is driving me mad. I understand there may be a point to all this but I just can’t take it anymore. I’m only listening at this point because I’m camping and there is no data and I’ve listened to all my other audiobooks. Ah! I have podcasts! I’m definitely returning this.

Sprawling, engrossing, and just plain cool
Revisado: 03-22-21
most audiobooks I only listen to while I'm doing stuff: driving, laundry, walking the dog. this one I was so engrossed sometimes I had nothing to do so I would just lay down and listen. I enjoyed it and am very glad I gave it a chance. when it transitions from outbreak time to distant post outbreak time, initially I was a little annoyed as I lost those characters that I was invested in. but I stuck with it and was glad I did. great book! on to the next one!

Historia
War heroes aren't usually called out of semi-retirement and sent to the far reaches of the galaxy for a routine investigation. So when Colonel Carl Butler answers the call from an old and powerful friend, he knows it's something big - and he's not being told the whole story. A high councilor's son has gone MIA out of Cappa Base, the space station orbiting a battle-ravaged planet. The young lieutenant had been wounded and evacuated - but there's no record of him having ever arrived at hospital command.

Historia
I’ve been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me. Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries.

On Bongoing Naked and Family: A Meditation
Revisado: 12-30-20
How cool is Matthew Mcconaughey? The answer is very cool. One of the coolest. He's too weird to live, to strange to die. This collection of stories from his life gives us some insight into this national treasure. I enjoyed his writing style (except his penchant for stringing together 4 or 5 adjectives to say the same thing got old and didn't really contribute, but rather was distracting as it seemed like he was using a thesaurus to sound smart). my only criticism. otherwise just sit back and let his buttery melodic voice caress your ears for a few hours. Audiobook is the ONLY way to take this in.

Historia
In The Black Swan Taleb outlined a problem, and in Antifragile he offers a definitive solution: how to gain from disorder and chaos while being protected from fragilities and adverse events. For what Taleb calls the "antifragile" is actually beyond the robust, because it benefits from shocks, uncertainty, and stressors, just as human bones get stronger when subjected to stress and tension. The antifragile needs disorder in order to survive and flourish. Taleb stands uncertainty on its head, making it desirable, even necessary, and proposes that things be built in an antifragile manner.

Can't stand this guy bloviating about his superiority to everyone. Occasional nuggets of wisdom, but not worth sifting through the crud to find. I couldn't finish it.
