Read this book in 1990 and loved it. Read it in 2021 and love it even more. Malcom X was an amazing powerhouse of insight and intellect.

And sadly, in 2021 we’ve barely made progress since 1965. If you think this book is out of date- you’re woefully mistaken.

If you like historical accounts about the day to day life of someone, this book won’t disappoint on that account either.

This is the best book I've listened to in a very long time. I was hesitant that some of the nerdier 80s references might pass over me and I'd be lost but nope. I should have had more faith in myself. I did graduate in '89 after all.
This book is extremely entertaining and I frequently wished I could climb inside and experience the Oasis. Wil Wheaton was an excellent choice for a narrator too. Enjoy!

As friend's asked me if this book was as sad as his first, I, only part way through, mistakenly said it was not. But this book, like no other, made me feel like I could truly begin to understand the woes of modern Afghanistan. It may be a bit tough at times but I always wanted to listen to it since it is told in such a way that, while the protaganist may be in a difficult situation at the moment, the next moment comes and then the next until you get through it. We have each looked back on difficult moments of our lives and wondered how we made it through-without a spec of self pity and our strength carries us forward.

I would love to read a book on these same topics with a man as the protoganist. While the culture has cultivated the acceptance of some unthinkable norms, somewhere in the beginning someone thought it acceptable and countless others followed suit. Why?

I would hate to discourage a single person from listening to this book because they thought it would be too sad...it is truly a beautiful book, narrated very well. I just listened to the Inheritance of Loss before this and the story is woefully inadequate in comparison to A Thousand Splendid Suns. It, too, was a beautiful display of culture and thought process but it is the current difficult decisions that move us forward and keep us aware. A Thousand Splendid Suns puts you in the situation and makes you wonder what you would do.

Now, I haven't actually listened to much of this but it sure was handy to have on the plane for our 3 year old! It was a great distraction and made her feel so big to use the ipod to listen to her own book! And she even enjoyed it!!

Entertaining yet not very memorable

I enjoyed this book and really liked the modern elements that comprise the storyline. The narrator/author is very good. I recommend this book since it's present day and very entertaining but I have to say that I can't even remember the end and I listened to it very recently. It has a great way of weaving many characters from far and near together which is such a great reminder of how small the world has become.

This book had many elements I enjoy...travel, human nature, new family issues...but I felt like some of the events that take place were pointless and only there for shock appeal for lack of a better phrase. There were so many good kernels of potential directions the story could go but the lack of depth in any of them made me want more. I did enjoy the story but I would have rather borrowed a copy of the book rather than use my credit. The narratar has difficulty with female voices and American accents but it's a little entertaining.

This has been a favorite listen this year for me. I love human nature and all the quirks and lovable things that go along with it. This book is very special. Since the author/narrator is a voice actor, you couldn't wish for more in an audio book!

So believable!

I really enjoyed this book even though it was lengthy. I think this book is a better listen than read and I am so glad I gave it a try!

The story is so complex yet easy to follow as the author kindly reminds the listener of a character's relevance. I love stories that tie everyone together in a sensical and believable fashion.

What a clever way to think of magic. I found myself thinking of ways I could use magic. (Like when I bend down fifty times a day to pick up a toy or put on a shoe how handy would it be if a little seat popped up for me to rest on instead of killing my back). I'm sure Jonathan Strange would approve.

i read this book and could hardly put it down....the characters are perfectly portrayed and it is very hard to like any of them. who is right? who is deserving? how can something so simple turn out so tragic for all concerned. the ending couldn't have been more appropriate.
