Historia
The Carryx—part empire, part hive—has waged wars of conquest for centuries, destroying or enslaving species across the galaxy in its conflict with an ancient and deathless enemy. When they descend on the isolated world of Anjiin, the human population is abased, slaughtered, and put in chains. The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species. Dafyd Alkhor, assistant to a prestigious scientist, is captured along with his team.

Slow burn, boring middle
Revisado: 01-19-25
As I write this I have three hours left. I’ll finish the book, I’ll listen or read the novellas and do the same with the follow up books.
What was an exciting first handful of hours turned into a somewhat excruciating slow burn in the middle. What a waste of time. I hope, this is just one of those necessary evils akin to to massively boring part of any journey while en route to the end.
I wonder how many of the other reviews as a homage to the excellent nature of the authors other work.
I think I could have slept off the laser handful of hours, rejoined the book, and been none the wiser.

Historia
A vast and largely unseen transformation of how war is fought as profound as the invention of gunpowder or advent of the nuclear age is occurring. Flying cars that can land like helicopters, artificial intelligence-powered drones that can fly into buildings and map their interiors, microsatellites that can see through clouds and monitor rogue missile sites—all these and more are becoming part of America’s DIU-fast-tracked arsenal. Until recently, the Pentagon was known for its uncomfortable relationship with Silicon Valley and for slow-moving processes that acted as a brake on innovation.

I’ve been thinking about executing on some ideas I’ve been considering for some time. I found the book illuminating, and I’m excited at the prospect of a more accessible ecosystem in the defense hemisphere.
This was an excellent read, and I highly recommend.

Mixed feelings
Revisado: 08-20-23
I enjoyed the Dragon Blade series, and for the most part have enjoyed this series as well.
However, I do think there were too many competing stories vying for attention and not adding a huge volume of substance to the book. Towards the end I wasn’t sure if the book was even really about the protagonist any longer.
I also don’t understand why authors of many fantasy series shy away from intimate relationships. Most capable beings of power like those depicted in this book would be more than interested in relationships, short or long term. I was disappointed in the distance that author places between Holt and Talia, and I don’t think it served much. I was equally disappointed in how the author approached this situation in the dragon blade series. I didn’t get the sense of Holt “growing into his own”, as a function of this development, I just thought, “that guy is just gonna walk away without even trying, weak”.
Anyway, will read the next few books in the series to the end.

Love this story. I’m sad it came to an end, and I’m hopeful the author may return to it somebody to build upon such an excellent series once again.
Thanks again for such an excellent and compelling story!

Decent, got bored.
Revisado: 05-06-23
I’ve listened to many titles in the genre. This particular series isn’t bad, but I lost interested by book 7, which for me, typically does not happen.
I don’t have any specific complaints, it was effective at passing the time, and I did enjoy many aspects of the story, but it wasn’t a series I would rate at the pinnacle of LitRPG.

Superb writing and voice acting. I throughly enjoyed the series, and my only disappointment is that there aren’t more Kings Dark Tidings books to read available yet. After finishing book 5 I anxiously await additional novels to continue to discovering the world Kel Kade is unraveling for her readers.

Love the series, book 8 was slow
Revisado: 12-18-22
This was a hit of a filler book. I’ve enjoyed the series very much, but this book the least. It was short and didn’t have much substance relative to the prior books. Hopefully book 9 will get things back on track again.

The galaxy is doomed. Monkeys may be clever and too stubborn to give up, but Skippy The Idiot Who Got Played knows the harsh truth: this is a fight he can’t win. The odds are not only stacked against him, he was designed not to win this fight. Maybe he can salvage some faint memory of the civilizations that inhabit the galaxy, but those beings are doomed. Doomed. Including the Merry Band of Pirates.

The Series is Perfect
Revisado: 12-14-22
I just finished the final book in this series. They are spectacular, what a fun ride. I sure hope to see the Merry Band or Pirates back in some other galaxy or universe spanning event in the future. Craig left the door open for a lot of ways things could progress down the line and a lot of events unaddressed(but not in a bad way), that could make good substance for additional stores.
Spend the money on all the books! I did, and I bought paperback variants for my library as well. Well done!
