Do you like ancient alien tech that is both mysterious and dangerous with the idea that people risk their lives and even brave cannibalism to use it to have a shot at glory? If so you should probably look elsewhere because you'll find almost none of that here. Instead you'll get pages and pages of a character study of a terrible person drinking, smoking, smoking weed, banging chicks, and yes committing domestic violence all while he whines endlessly about it to a robot psychologist. I don't know how you could have a worse execution of a book with an interesting sci fi premise. The fact that this pile of garbage won both a Hugo and a Nebula casts doubt for me over any book that has won those awards in terms of being a barometer of quality. This sucked.

Christopher Ruocchio hits another home run with this wonderful addition to his Sun Eater Universe. This is my favorite thing he has written outside of the main novels. It has an exciting plot. It expands the world. It gives hints of future events. And it develops the characters by making them wrestle with the concept of justice and ends justifying the means and how that fits into the larger scope of Hadrian's story from the main series. Also you get more insight into the Cielcin that is horrifying. Don't sleep on Sun Eater and don't sleep on the accompanying novellas.

Sam Roukin is Hadrian Marlowe and brings Ruocchio's wonderful story to life. Loved it in every way. Don't sleep on this series. It might be the best sci fi currently being written and published.

In between big epic fantasy and sci fi books I always look for fast paced thrillers to act as a pallette cleanser. Sometimes it's just nice to read a good old shoot em up that isn't 25 plus hours long.

This book in the Eric Steele series by Sean Parnell fits that bill quite nicely. I've read everything Parnell has written. While his non-fiction, Outlaw Platoon, about his experience in Afghanistan is a non-fiction masterpiece his fiction is more popcorn entertainment but delivers in that regard. I think this is probably the weakest if the 3 Steele books, but the reason you read these, the action, is still executed at a high level here. There is one action sequence in particular that I thought "Wow I'd love to see that on screen." It may be over the top and not always realistic, but that's a tradeoff I'm willing to make.

My criticisms generally revolve around some plot choices that are hard to discuss without spoilers. I'll just say I don't like it when an author has characters make poor choices that don't make sense for plot convenience. It happens a few times here. Also I didn't think the villain was that original or fleshed out.

I'm not sure if we will be getting another entry in this series or not. The author is currently running for Congress (I hope he wins) so that may impact the series. Ultimately I hope we do get more Eric Steele because it feels like there are some plotlines that need tying up.

Solid but not the best Bosch

Good narrator. Middling story in the Bosch catalog. The following book, The Concrete Blonde is much better. The drug cartel aspect of this seemed played out in 2020 though in 93 it was probably new. I like how Bosch figures it out at the end, but less cool detective work than in other books.

First off Jay Snyder is one of the best narrators in the business and makes every character and accent come alive in the story. Every Greany book with him is a win.

As far as the story goes it was good to spend more time with the Gray Man, and this developed his backstory a little more. The action scenes where we get to see Court do his thing amd live up to his reputation are phenomenal and make this book. The problem is I could have used more of them. Too much of Court's one man cartel war takes place off page, and we hear about it from other characters. Also, the stakes felt lower here with everything revolving around a single family without larger geopolitical machinations. It was worth it though when we see Court Gentry break loose.

The Bosch series continues to get better with age. The way Connelly has introduced Ballard and weaves together multiple cases in a single narrative is masterful. I loved how in this book even though Bosch is older and somewhat infirmed he knows his limitations and leverages the partnership with Ballard to maximum effect. The cases here keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing right up until the reveals. Also the narration by Titus Welliver and Christine Lakin is perfect. They are those characters.

Bettley Brings The Action

Nobody writes an action sequence like Matthew Bettley. Rules of War is a non-stop rollercoaster ride of great action scenes from beginning to end. I think the only thing that holds the Logan West series from being as big as others in the genre is the dialogue could be better, and the main character, Logan West, is less interesting than supporting characters like John Quick and Amira Cerrone. This series is also more serial in nature than others in the genre to the point where this book may not make as much sense to you if you haven't read the others first. But as someone who has done so I really enjoy that aspect, and this was a fitting end to the series. I didn't factor it into my overall rating because I felt it was only fair to rate the book based on the content, but I do not like the narrator for this book (and series) at all. I think he has a strange inflection and style that can make dialogue that may be good on the page come off as flippant that doesn't match the tone of the scene. It's not a coincidence that my favorite book in the series was the one I read as a physical copy.
