Interesting and disturbing

As the daughter of a narcissist, I listened to this with interest. This woman, who is my age, uses her alcoholism to excuse all of her shortcomings, and conveniently forgets what she doesn't choose to remember. Somehow she finally found a husband, the 4th or 5th, who has enabled her for many years. While not very intelligent, she is an expert manipulator and being rich doesn't hurt. She's far worse than my mother ever was.

I will always read them after reading this, which describes almost every kind of depravity there is between so called family members. BEWARE!

Excellent and Creepy

This was a very strange and compelling story, and of course Richard Armitage is a fantastic narrator. I was able to predict a few twists, but the more important ones near the end were real surprises! I recommend it.

Well this brought back memories...

My husband had a condition called "intermittent explosive disorder," which involved random extreme anger outbursts for little or no reason. Needless to say we are not still together, and haven't been for a long time. Great story, though, I enjoyed it!

Very good, historically mostly accurate

I enjoyed this story, and as an ancient history buff appreciated the authenticity and research the author put into it. But, the narrator didn't quite work for me. Still, a good historical novel.

Wonderful story though harrowing in parts

This is a great combination of lofty artistic musings and the gritty realities of war. wonderful writing and narration! The only drawback for me was that it seemed a bit too long.

Great book though a little weird

Being about the age of the protagonist, I was thrilled with the fact that the 72 year old woman was depicted as a real, fully functioning human being and not someone who is losing her mind or sick or a burden on every one around her. Very impressive character. Also, I grew up and came of age in New Age California, so all that was familiar. But, the book seemed a bit too long. Otherwise, a wonderful story!

The story seemed familiar!

...and I realized it was extremely similar to the old movie, "Key Largo," from 1948. Though the characters were different, the plot was much the same. Not too original.

A Unique Story

As someone who lived through the 1950s as a child, I was familiar with the era, and it was far from perfect time in my experience. My mother was very left wing and hated being a housewife. She'd worked for the United Nations after the war and for United Airlines in the late 40s. I grew up in San Francisco which was tolerant and progressive then as now. Much more so than D.C. Living there was great when I entered my teens in the 60s.

The book was very entertaining even though the deception at the end was a little hard to swallow. Great story though!

Not satisfying

I didn't like the main character here, though the story was fairly good. I know that many characters in domestic thrillers tend to be unlikable and dumb, but this one was not only that, but cold hearted including to a friend who literally risked their life for her. After that person was attacked, she went out to a social event. Not nice, and not appealing.
