Historia
When poet and writer Joy Davidman began writing letters to C. S. Lewis - known as Jack - she was looking for spiritual answers, not love. Love, after all, wasn’t holding together her crumbling marriage. Everything about New Yorker Joy seemed ill-matched for an Oxford professor and the beloved writer of The Chronicles of Narnia, yet their minds bonded over their letters.

An amazing story. Looking forward to a second Audio version with great actors.
Revisado: 03-11-21
This is such an amazing undertaking and ads so much depth to the historical record of the relationship both from a human and spiritual perspective.
A second Audio version should be commissioned, though. I’d love to hear it done by an ensemble whose acting skills are at the level of the Shadowlands film. I see many of us feel similarly regarding the performance.

ironically, not helpful to the intended cause
Revisado: 08-13-20
Some have said this was written by Harry and Meghan, and that seems true given the one sided telling of their experiences.
I also felt unnerved reading this given how much this brings into focus the blatant wealth inequality of royals and their celebrity friends alike.
I am not an anti-royalist, just an anti wealth hoarding realist.

Great Book; Slow down the narrator
Revisado: 06-01-20
Had to slow down the narrator to .9. Then it’s listenable. The story is great. Not a straight bio though. Sounds more like a third person poetic memoir.

Historia
Through such hits as "The Sound of Silence", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Still Crazy After All These Years", and "Graceland", Paul Simon has spoken to us in songs for a half-century about alienation, doubt, resilience, and empathy in ways that have established him as one of the most honored and beloved songwriters in American pop music history. His music has gone beyond the sales charts into our cultural consciousness. He was the first songwriter awarded the Gershwin Prize by the Library of Congress and is a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Profoundly inspirational
Revisado: 07-30-18
Highly recommend to anyone who loves Paul Simon’s music, is a creative person of any kind, and wants to understand his creative process. It also illustrates how marriage, even for a good person, doesn’t always work the first or even second time around but can when you meet the right person. Found the audio narration clear but too stoic and emotionally invariant, perhaps by design but I’m wondering if a different reader would bring the words, especially song lyrics to life. Even better would be to have Paul Simon read his own statements and lyrics.

Historia
The official and definitive biography of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother: Consort of King George VI, mother of Queen Elizabeth II, grandmother of Prince Charles - and the most beloved British monarch of the 20th century. Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon - the ninth of the Earl of Strathmore’s 10 children - was born on August 4, 1900, and, certainly, no one could have imagined that her long life (she died in 2002) would come to reflect a changing nation over the course of an entire century.

Great bio of Queen Mother but too official
Revisado: 06-25-18
The good: detailed bio. Fills in some of the background missing from other books, films and videos. Clearly narrated with cute interjections of different actors playing the characters like the Queen Mother.
The bit strange: so little real detail about the relationship of the Queen Mother with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. It feels like a lot of this content was intentionally left out or cut.
The stultified: a bit condescending culturally to contemporary British popular culture.

Makes me wish Ian Fleming wrote it
Revisado: 07-23-16
A very accurate Bio of Dusko Popov who was Ian Fleming's true to life inspiration for James Bond. Larry Loftis' portrait is in depth and accurate at a level even beyond scholarly. But for me this work doesn't have the color and passion of Fleming's writing. It's good to read though for a view into this amazing life of a very real spy, for yet another WWII experience and perspective, and for an appreciation of Fleming's ability to create his character and settings from this real person and actual places.

Historia
Nearly six hundred years ago, a short, genial, cannily alert man in his late 30s took a very old manuscript off a library shelf, saw with excitement what he had discovered, and ordered that it be copied. That book was the last surviving manuscript of an ancient Roman philosophical epic by Lucretius—a beautiful poem containing the most dangerous ideas: that the universe functioned without the aid of gods, that religious fear was damaging to human life, and that matter was made up of very small particles.

A great history lesson that devolves into an anti-sermon
Revisado: 02-08-16
A great history lesson that devolves into an anti-sermon.
What does that mean?
We are completely immerse in our western history, particularly Roman Catholic History, with extreme detail. It's all jaw dropping stuff until his conclusions. these are sadly from the point of view of someone who as a humanist turns his findings into a case against religion. The author tells us to open our minds to escape our beliefs but only to encase us again in his own humanist evangelism, which is still a belief and in the end no less a religion.
