Historia
Jason Fitger is a beleaguered professor of creative writing and literature at Payne University, a small and not very distinguished liberal arts college in the midwest. His department is facing draconian cuts and squalid quarters, while one floor above them the Economics Department is getting lavishly remodeled offices. His once-promising writing career is in the doldrums, as is his romantic life, in part as the result of his unwise use of his private affairs for his novels.

An excellent performance
Revisado: 02-24-19
As someone who spent her working life in academia, I found this book both funny and sad. The narrator is excellent, conveying the wry, weary tone of a beleaguered professor in a changing climate. The epistolary format works very well, slowly unfolding a compelling story. Well worth a credit.

David Oshinsky, whose last book, Polio: An American Story, was awarded a Pulitzer Prize, chronicles the history of America's oldest hospital and in so doing also charts the rise of New York to the nation's preeminent city, the path of American medicine from butchery and quackery to a professional and scientific endeavor, and the growth of a civic institution.

I enjoy both medical history and the history of New York, so this book was up my alley. Many fascinating stories, good narration. For some reason, I'm haunted by what happened -- or didn't happen -- at the hospital on 9/11. Recommended.

Historia
Today it is known as Roosevelt Island. In 1828, when New York City purchased this narrow, two-mile-long island in the East River, it was called Blackwell's Island. There, over the next hundred years, the city would build a lunatic asylum, prison, hospital, workhouse, and almshouse. Stacy Horn has crafted a compelling and chilling narrative told through the stories of the poor souls sent to Blackwell's, as well as the period's city officials, reformers, and journalists (including the famous Nellie Bly). Damnation Island re-creates what daily life was like on the island....

Interesting Listen
Revisado: 10-01-18
I found this book very interesting, horrifying in many of its details. It was well written. My only qualm was that I found something annoying about the narrator's voice -- not enough to turn the book off, though. Overall, a good listen.

Historia
Milly's mother is a serial killer. Though Milly loves her mother, the only way to make her stop is to turn her in to the police. Milly is given a fresh start: a new identity, a home with an affluent foster family, and a spot at an exclusive private school. But Milly has secrets, and life at her new home becomes complicated. As her mother's trial looms, with Milly as the star witness, Milly starts to wonder how much of her is nature, how much of her is nurture, and whether she is doomed to turn out like her mother after all.

Very creepy --
Revisado: 05-14-18
It's hard to say I loved this book because it was so creepy. I think the author did a great job in creating an unreliable narrator -- she slowly and subtly sets off little bombs along the way. The premise is intriguing -- is there any hope for the child of a serial killer who was abused and complicit her whole life? How will she cope with trying to be "normal"? I was gripped all the way through. The narrator did an excellent job with the voices.

Sci-Fi for non-Sci-Fi lovers
Revisado: 03-30-18
This book and I got off to a rocky start. I started it, wasn't taken with it, and went on to something else. Then, because of a glitch between Audible and iTunes that wouldn't allow me to transfer books, I wound up with "The Sparrow" as the only unread book on my iPod in the car, so I started it over. I almost asked for my money back on it, because of the audio -- the narration was fine, but whenever there was dialogue, the sound level dropped so low that it had me cranking the volume up, only to be blasted once the narration came on again. Somehow, that problem got better and somehow I kept listening.
It becomes a very absorbing book. The characters were finely drawn and well-developed, the plot unfolds bit by bit, jumping between past and present, and the pieces slowly begin to fall into place. The narrator is simply incredible -- he had so many different voices and accents to keep straight and did a beautiful job with them. I was in awe.
I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi, but this one is special. So many huge questions about God and faith and "humanity" and good intentions . . . in the end, I was left with a knot in my stomach and questions that gnawed at my brain. That's a good book, right?

Historia
In The Butchering Art, the historian Lindsey Fitzharris reveals the shocking world of 19th-century surgery on the eve of profound transformation. She conjures up early operating theaters - no place for the squeamish - and surgeons, working before anesthesia, who were lauded for their speed and brute strength. They were baffled by the persistent infections that kept mortality rates stubbornly high. A young, melancholy Quaker surgeon named Joseph Lister would solve the deadly riddle and change the course of history.

Grisly, yes, but fascinating
Revisado: 01-19-18
This is a great book -- if you have interest in scientific/medical history, you'll love it. Yes, it's grisly, and at times even my strong stomach churned a bit, but it really conveys the atmosphere of the times. It's so interesting to learn the ways in which science crept forward over the years. Highly recommended!

An enjoyable listen
Revisado: 01-19-18
I wasn't wild about this book, but I enjoyed it. I was put off at first by the narrator's voice, but he grew on me, and actually he was quite good with women's voices, which isn't always the case. It had a lot of interesting history in it, and it led me to look into a few historical things that I wanted to know more about. I guess my criticism is that it edged toward melodrama; there's nothing subtle about the plot events. Also, I feel a scene at the end was missing -- especially given the melodramatic edge. But, I listened to the end, and I did enjoy it.

Historia
Being on the murder squad is nothing like Detective Antoinette Conway dreamed it would be. Her partner, Stephen Moran, is the only person who seems glad she's there. The rest of her working life is a stream of thankless cases, vicious pranks, and harassment. Antoinette is savagely tough, but she's getting close to the breaking point. Their new case looks like yet another by-the-numbers lovers' quarrel gone bad. Aislinn Murray is blond, pretty, groomed to a shine, and dead in her catalogue-perfect living room, next to a table set for a romantic dinner.

I *love* Tana French and eagerly await each new novel. That said, I couldn't get through this one! It seemed like the conflicts among the various detectives went on . . . and on . . . and on. I may give it a chance again later (if I find myself with nothing to listen to at some point), but for now, I've switched it off.

Historia
It's just a small story really, about, among other things, a girl, some words, an accordionist, some fanatical Germans, a Jewish fist-fighter, and quite a lot of thievery. Set during World War II in Germany, Markus Zusak's groundbreaking new novel is the story of Liesel Meminger, a foster girl living outside of Munich. Liesel scratches out a meager existence for herself by stealing when she encounters something she can't resist: books.

One of the best in years --
Revisado: 06-28-17
I don't know how I missed this book when it first came out -- it's the best book I've read in years. It's beautifully written, perfectly narrated, and has a compelling story. It's the perfect book to listen to, because it's a story told by a storyteller. Beware of driving down the road with tears falling! I couldn't recommend it more highly.
