An encompassing study of the man and his times. This is a fine grained history of Wilson and his world. The epilogue carries the book to its logical end. Recommended

Historia
When James Quinn and Vernor Stanton reunite at the Centennial Club, the scene of many a carefree childhood summer, Stanton marks the occasion by shooting his friend in the heart. The good news is that the bullet is made of wax. The bad news is that the Mephistophelian Stanton wants Quinn to help him wreak havoc upon this genteel enclave of weekend sportsmen: "May I predict that this is not going to be the usual boring, phlegmatic summer?"

Overwrought voice acting
Revisado: 01-25-24
The story was hyperbolic, but both it and the rendering of the sporting club in early 20th C America both had potential, one spoiled by the antagonist's caricatured voice. Did not finish.

Historia
Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can't seem to heal through literature is himself; he's still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened.

Plot, character and tension disappear into a yearning and melodramatic romance. I tried to like it but failed and did not finish.

Brutal
Revisado: 05-20-23
The book recounts chapters and decades of American life that, at least for me, were as hidden and dark as the coal mines in which the central character wastes away. The detailed brutality and ubiquitous corruption make for difficult but rivetting listening. This picks up where Project 1619 leaves off. Recommended.

Historia
The Years is a personal narrative of the period of 1941 to 2006 told through the lens of memory, impressions past and present - even projections into the future - photos, books, songs, radio, television, and decades of advertising and headlines, contrasted with intimate conflicts and written notes from six decades of diaries. Local dialect, words of the time, slogans, brands, and names for ever-proliferating objects are given a voice here. The voice we recognize as the author's continually dissolves and re-emerges.

Historia
Bloomsbury Books is an old-fashioned new and rare book store that has persisted and resisted change for a hundred years, run by men and guided by the general manager's unbreakable fifty-one rules. But in 1950, the world is changing, especially the world of books and publishing, and at Bloomsbury Books, the girls in the shop have plans.

A beautifully crafted tale, one in which I could revisit some of the 20th C's most interesting lit figures (Connolly, Peggy G, Blair). Predictably excellent narration. Recommend to lovers of lit fiction.

The Nine follows the true story of the author’s great aunt Hélène Podliasky, who led a band of nine female resistance fighters as they escaped a German forced labor camp and made a 10-day journey across the front lines of World War II from Germany back to Paris. Drawing on incredible research, this powerful, heart-stopping narrative is a moving tribute to the power of humanity and friendship in the darkest of times.

Historia
The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning “1619 Project” issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This new book substantially expands on that work, weaving together 18 essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with 36 poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance.

Awe and exhilaration—along with heartbreak and mordant wit—abound in Lolita, which tells the story of the aging Humbert Humbert's obsession for the nymphet Dolores Haze. Lolita is also the story of a hypercivilized European colliding with the cheerful barbarism of postwar America.

strange, dark, and sad
Revisado: 10-28-21
My fourth time through Lolita, each time a different book. Titillating as a teen. Now, it seems a study of a narcissistic and/or psychopathic, delusional personality, draped over a squandered talent. Resilient Lolita survived but scarred forever. Mr. Irons is excellent. Recommend
