Historia
North Dakota, late summer, 1999. Landreaux Iron stalks a deer along the edge of the property bordering his own. He shoots with easy confidence - but when the buck springs away, Landreaux realizes he's hit something else, a blur he saw as he squeezed the trigger. When he staggers closer, he realizes he has killed his neighbor's five-year-old son, Dusty Ravich.

A reading full of feeling, by the author
Revisado: 04-22-18
"Sorrow eats time. Be patient, time eats sorrow."
LaRose is a heartbreakingly beautiful story, full of love, grief, humor, rage, resentment, and sass. Ordinary people, even shabby people, people you might not look at twice, live deeply, connect, alienate, are brilliant, are incredibly stupid, are clinically depressed and suicidal, are full of resolve, are totally screwed up, and are utterly extraordinary. It's a story worth savoring, and Louise Erdrich exceptional narration allows the reader to do just that.

Historia
With more than two million copies of her novels sold, New York Times best-selling author Geraldine Brooks has achieved both popular and critical acclaim. Now, Brooks takes on one of literature's richest and most enigmatic figures: a man who shimmers between history and legend. Peeling away the myth to bring David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from beloved king to murderous despot and into his remorseful and diminished dotage.

It tried too hard to move me
Revisado: 02-14-17
Perhaps it is impossible to tell the story of King David without employing empurpled prose. The story is well crafted and carries the reader easily along its arc, the characters are, for the most part, vividly drawn, and the harsh life of the time is portrayed unflinchingly. But somehow, I was unmoved. Thank the Name there was no soundtrack, which would have to be big and bold, with many trumpets. Not my cup of tea.

Earnest and generally likeable, not thrilling
Revisado: 05-10-16
Narrator Zack Villa was fantastic, with a warm voice and a light touch on the different characters. Otherwise, a likeable but all too predictable story, felt like YA. There were well done moments and vivid descriptions of Minnesota. Had the narration not been as good as it was, I doubt I would have made it through to the end of the story.
