I made the mistake of reading the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn first. I didn't realize it was the sequel in the story. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was a good story, but the sequel is so much better!

Elijah Wood was stellar! The voices, the accents and regionalisms - his performance made the story come alive. I'd rather listen to him read it than I'm my own head, having no idea what the characters would have sounded like. Huck and Tom are boys living for adventure. The ending made it all worth while. Two boys and Jim becoming family is the best!

The story of the woman at the well was particularly powerful. I can’t imagine any of us understood what her life was like banished from society and the courage it took to walk into that crowd, trusting Jesus would cast off her shame and heal her.

Excellent book for parents and teen caregivers

This is an excellent book for parents, educators, therapists and anyone working with teenagers. Shipp covers a wide range of topics and gives specific suggestions on how to relate well to teens. I will be recommending it to all the parents with whom I work.

As a therapist, I would be remiss if I didn’t note that he doesn’t have an accurate understanding of what the various credentialed therapists offer. If you are looking for a counselor for your teen be sure to search for the distinctions between psychiatrists, psychologists and masters level therapists/counselors. The names of latter group depends on what their degree is in. The therapy they provide doesn’t necessarily.

Finally, co-regulation, as discussed in the latter part of the book, does not mean the child and the parent help to regulate each other. It means the parent joins the child in helping the child regulate until he or she can self regulate consistently. I believe this is a significant correction.
