it has taken me some time to figure out why I don't enjoy the White/Gannon half of this franchise. It boils down to there is no sense of scale to anything that is happening. the fleet engagements do not feel like they mean anything, fleet sizes have become nebulous and vague, and the costs associated with the conflicts have no emotional impact.
the latter 4 books at least start off with decent characters but as time goes on less interesting ones are introduced and their motivations are not explored. The writing just feels mechanical, like it was written by the third string for a cash grab.
The narrator however does a superb job that I can't fault and is really the only thing that carries this and the subsequent 3 books. The story certainly doesn't do much to help him.
