Historia
In the war-torn London of 1939, fourteen-year-old Hazel and five-year-old Flora are evacuated to a rural village to escape the horrors of the Second World War. Living with the kind Bridie Aberdeen and her teenage son, Harry, in a charming stone cottage along the River Thames, Hazel fills their days with walks and games to distract her young sister, including one that she creates for her sister and her sister alone—a fairy tale about a magical land, a secret place they can escape to that is all their own.

Tale of survival, isolation and connection
Revisado: 05-21-24
I love a well worded novel and the imagery was well done. You are brought on a journey of children surviving operation “Pied Piper” during WWIi. The story is solving the mystery of Flora, as well as the internals struggles surrounding Hazel’s wartime coming of age that conflicts with her current timeline. It is not tidy cliches but well versed experiences that are often messy, confusing and unpredictable. I enjoyed the story so much from beginning to end.

Historical Fiction that needs to be told
Revisado: 06-22-22
Let me first explains that 5* reviews, for me, are left to the classics. That being said, this book was very well written. Beautiful descriptors and a clear understanding of language. The beginning was a bit hard to follow, as you don’t understand the significance of the characters until later. The main story however, was captivating, however very hard to read at times, as the human capability for brutality and bigotry is heartbreaking. When the back story is married to the current story, it shows the roots, then blossoms. This is not a happily ever after story, but is is real in that there are choices made that forever change the course of our life. It doesn’t mean our life is over. The different path has purpose of its own.

Heartwarming
Revisado: 02-25-22
THe Right Kind of Fool reminded me so much of To Kill a Mockingbird. It was so well written! The characters battled with moral issues that cut to the heart of friendship, family and community. The author captured the coming of age emotions as well as the emotions of adults as they battled their own demons. This would also be a great book for a school age child. It is a timeless classic, I enjoyed it very much!

Lacks Character
Revisado: 05-31-21
I read this book for book Club. Everyone else loves it, I dreaded each new chapter. I would never want to say that a mother grieving the death of a child that she inadvertently killed, is a bad story. This could be the start of a great story! Just not this story.
For my taste, everything read on the surface. This story needed more than one voice and just, more.
I am not a fan of books that use modern terms like “Twitter”. It immediately puts it in the shallow end for me. I don’t find it gives any relevance at all. I did not feel the “hacker” side story was even mildly intriguing, it felt more distracting. The dialogue was stunted, surface and I never got caught up with any of the characters. I would have liked to root for the main character if she just wasn’t self absorbed.
You get more detail way too late in the story and then the author hurries to tie it all together. I am not opposed to a light read but the subject matter did not equate with that. All the dialogue seemed banal to me.

Historia
Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

Coming of Age
Revisado: 03-21-20
This book deals with some hard elements, but chooses to develop only one relationship fully, that of Raymond and Mrs. G. I will say the reader made the book rather unpleasant. His voice infections D breathes were very difficult for me. The story was not rich in text though I believe tries to be. The story itself is a kind of pay it forward while maturing Raymond and deepening bid understanding of the self and how he’s fits in it. I appreciate the authors ability to add harmony and balance for tough topics and does not leave you feeling disappointed by the way characters deal with pain and sorrow. Out is hard for me to enjoy what feels like a Young Reader Novel as so much language is left out. But I believe young readers will appreciate that. Enjoyed the story, though I was not a huge fan of Raymond. His insecurity was a bit grating as a main character. He also had eccentricities that my temperament could not tolerate. That is purely subjective on my part. Remembering he is 17. I did, however, love Mrs. G. He character was engaging and always a surprise. The author did a good job of tying it together and ending well.

Fantastic Adventure!
Revisado: 03-14-19
Thy son read this book for 6th grade. I had a day long chore to do and decided to listen in full as I only got bits and pieces with him. What a tale!!! I lamented at not having read it first to discuss the Christian themes. This book can preach! I highly recommend for boys and girls if high adventure as it never stops being engaging. No matter your faith, the themes and virtues are tried and tested and the lessons are timeless. Pride and fear are a constant lure, you must overcome it and make peace. A MUST read!
