I've listened to Phelps Podcasts for at least a decade. I went back for all the updates. I was excited about this venture. Having listened, I am more than disappointed. Phelps return to long form narrative is a trainwreck, and not the kind you are drawn to watch. He has so many facts wrong in the first few episodes I cringe over my past dedication. Has he always been this wrong, had facts so jumbled in other cases? Now I have to wonder, apparently he is not actually an investigator. He barely did his homework here. Several episodes in and I cannot listen anymore.

This is the consummate podcast to know what happened and what's happening in this case. Churchwell doesn't miss a detail. Not one for the commonwealth, not one for the defense. The evidence, the contention of the evidence and the perplexing lack of obvious would be evidence-it's all in there. It remains as balanced as possible in a highly disturbing case of murder in which nothing much the CW so forcefully claims is believable or supported. Conversely, the Defense is left with mounds of perjurious lies to sort out.

I grew up with a steelworker father and grandfather a little further down the river. This helped me to understand the dynamics of our valley on over to Pittsburgh so much more than I ever thought I could care. This will w/o a doubt be the 1st podcast I introduce to my 85 yr old dad. He's a silent observer type, fascinated w/ loudmouths, and I bet he will have stories to dine out on (perhaps at Naples restaurant). I'm sending this to my brothers right now. I always wondered why so, so many people from a town made of the river seemed to die in stupid accidents on the river. He would not discuss these things with us as children.
The storytelling really helped me to understand why people still make a deferrential sign of the cross when Trafficant's name is brought up. This did him justice as man who loved his people and Youngstown. There truly was ZERO viable way for anyone to turn sheriff without getting dirty and playing dirty. The only choice was balancing the acts. Trafficant put his heart into his work and did not disappoint his voters. I witnessed his era & the news of the valley led me to believe he was 100% self-serving and oozing criminal misdeeds. I'm happy to be corrected on that matter. He talked a big game, but UNLIKE every other politico now, he fought like hell trying to bring the win home.

A little too explicit with the blood and gore (I literally gagged during one scene) and depressing as hell. The plot was engrossing and not easily surmised; however the excessive descriptions of violent death and maimings detracted from the story. I can give credit that my visceral response means it's written with great talent. That being said, I probably will not continue with this series...

I literally listen to Murder Mystery books all day long to maintain focus and lately have been so uninspired that I had taken to listening to Juvenile Fiction and some Romance/Mystery combos. This book was such a treat for my bored & uninspired mind! The premise was so thought provoking and refreshing. The story and characters provided me with some surprises. I'm all in on this "Disaster" series, can't wait to hear them all!
