Historia
In The WEIRDest People in the World, Joseph Henrich draws on cutting-edge research in anthropology, psychology, economics, and evolutionary biology to explore these questions and more. He illuminates the origins and evolution of family structures, marriage, and religion, and the profound impact these cultural transformations had on human psychology. Mapping these shifts through ancient history and late antiquity, Henrich reveals that the most fundamental institutions of kinship and marriage changed dramatically under pressure from the Roman Catholic Church.

Historia
Join Professor Fears for this riveting 24-lecture examination of fascinating figures who shaped the story of Greece from the Trojan War through the rise of Rome. What do their lives, studied in the context of their times, tell us about virtue and vice, folly and wisdom, success and failure? Inspired and informed by the monumental works of Homer, Herodotus, Thucydides, and Plutarch, these lectures allow you to do exactly that, guided by a truly great teacher.

Historia
Though it is the fastest growing religion in the world, Islam remains shrouded by ignorance and fear. What is the essence of this ancient faith? Is it a religion of peace or war? How does Allah differ from the God of Jews and Christians? Can an Islamic state be founded on democratic values such as pluralism and human rights? A writer and scholar of comparative religions, Reza Aslan has earned international acclaim for the passion and clarity he has brought to these questions.

An apologia
Revisado: 08-21-23
Reza Aslan is a brilliant expert on comparative religions. Unfortunately, his treatment of Islam is a dramatic departure from his treatment of Christianity. In his book "Zealot" he carefully examines the bible against historical facts and points out the inconsistencies. In "No god but God", he makes never-ending excuses for why Islam has not evolved to support any pluralistic society. He constantly blames the "West" and Imperialism for Islams faults, but British Imperialism ended more than 70 years ago. The book has lots (too much) of historical info on the various iterations of Islam. I learned a lot, but a balanced treatment would have been better.

Sadly this is now out of date with so many important rulings since it’s recording. Author states liberal bias upfront, but declaration does not cure some of his commentaries from that bias. Excellent historical perspective. Glad I listened.

Historia
On June 29, 1919, one day after the Treaty of Versailles brought about the end of World War I, nearly seventy cyclists embarked on the thirteenth Tour de France. From Paris, the war-weary men rode down the western coast on a race that would trace the country’s border, through seaside towns and mountains to the ghostly western front. Traversing a cratered postwar landscape, the cyclists faced near-impossible odds and the psychological scars of war. Most of the athletes had arrived straight from the front, where so many fellow countrymen had suffered or died.

Historia
As an economist and former banker, Mark Carney has spent his life in various financial roles, in both the public and private sector. Value(s) is a meditation on his experiences that examines the short-comings and challenges of the market in the past decade, which he argues has led to rampant public distrust and the need for radical change. Focusing on four major crises - the global financial crisis, the global health crisis, climate change, and the fourth Industrial Revolution - Carney proposes responses to each.

so disappointing
Revisado: 08-25-21
I am not sure who this book is for. Part economic history, part economic theory, part discussion of current events, and lots of moralizing. There are better books on all of Carney's topics and his is a mish mash of too many. His moralizing is unbearable. We should all strive for a just and perfect world, but no mention of China, South America or Africa. Totally unrealistic prescriptions. Painful to finish. Carney is a great central banker. This book is a rambling mess.
