Why we think it’s a great listen: An all-time Audible favorite that mixes historic fiction, adventure, and romance with one of the most fascinating literary devices: time travel. Outlander introduces an exhilarating world of heroism and breathtaking thrills as one woman is torn between past and present, passion and love. In 1945, former combat nurse Claire Randall returns from World War II and joins her husband for a second honeymoon. But their blissful reunion is shattered....

Five stars all the way!
Revisado: 08-05-24
As with the TV series, this book is extraordinary. Wonderfully written and a terrific example of historical fiction, this book offers everything. And don't forget the narrator--perhaps one of the best narrators that I have ever heard. The adventures of Jamie and Claire are captivating and interesting. I highly recommend.

Excellent
Revisado: 02-04-24
A wonderful book. David Grann tells this story simply, clearly, and beautifully. Historically speaking, he takes the time to explain why things were done (for example, why we have coroner’s inquests) in the context of the story’s historical narrative. Of course, it is an unusual and revealing piece of our history.
It throws light on how the Osage were treated. It vividly demonstrates the fear in their community during a time where they were lucky enough to be placed on valuable land (making the Osage wealthy) but unlucky enough to be treated very poorly by non tribesman and governments.
The book is much better than the movie’s screenplay.
The book is a terrific listen. I highly recommend.

Meh, at Best
Revisado: 01-07-24
Very difficult to get through this book. Very little story, little dialogue, but lots and lots of adverbs modifying adjectives throughout this overly descriptive book. The excellent narration does not help. I stuck with this book to see if there was any sort of change in its approach—but there was none. To be fair, this book may appeal to some, but it was not my cup of tea.

Henry Kissinger analyses the lives of six extraordinary leaders—Konrad Adenauer, Charles de Gaulle, Richard Nixon, Anwar Sadat, Lee Kuan Yew, and Margaret Thatcher—through the distinctive strategies of statecraft that he believes they embodied. To each of these studies, Kissinger brings historical perception, public experience and, because he knew each of the subjects and participated in many of the events he describes, personal knowledge.

Excellent, in every way
Revisado: 04-29-23
Henry Kissinger‘s book is an interesting and comprehensive look at 6 leaders who emerged (many from lower middle class backgrounds) in the post World War II world. Secretary Kissinger‘s personal involvement with each of these leaders adds an unexpected and wonderful dimension to this book. Highly recommend. The narration is terrific and the substance of the book is absolutely a five-star experience. This one checks all of my boxes. Definitely a must read.

Historia
A deeply private man, shut off even to those who worked closely with him, Abraham Lincoln often captured “his best thoughts", as he called them, in short notes to himself. He would work out his personal stances on the biggest issues of the day, never expecting anyone to see these pieces of writing, which he’d then keep close at hand, in desk drawers and even in his top hat. The profound importance of these notes has been overlooked, because the originals are scattered across several different archives and have never before been brought together and examined as a coherent whole.

A Good One--Highly Recommend
Revisado: 04-18-23
The content here is excellent. Ronald White is a superb writer and historian who analyzes the "inner" Lincoln through Lincoln's various notes ("fragments" as they often are referred to) that have surfaced over time. The author does a great job and his analysis is excellent. I was a little surprised at first that the author decided to narrate this book--most books with the gravitas of this author usually have a separate professional narrator--but in retrospect, I think Mr. White's voice adds to the charm of this short book. For shorter book lovers looking to take a break from a historical tome, I highly recommend this book.

Historia
It was heaven on earth—and, some whispered, the devil’s garden. Thousands came by trains and carriages to see this new Eden, carved from hundreds of acres of wild woodland. They marveled at orchards bursting with fruit, thick herds of Ayrshire cattle and Cotswold sheep, and whizzing mills. They gaped at the people who lived in this place—especially the women, with their queer cropped hair and shamelessly short skirts. The men and women of this strange outpost worked and slept together—without sin, they claimed.

The marketing of this book outdistances its actual content. That said, the content is at best ok. There are a few historical nuggets and gems that are interesting in the book, but overall, I cannot recommend or not recommend it. It is highly "meh."

Historia
George Washington claimed that anyone who attempted to provide an accurate account of the war for independence would be accused of writing fiction. At the time, no one called it the “American Revolution”: Former colonists still regarded themselves as Virginians or Pennsylvanians, not Americans, while John Adams insisted that the British were the real revolutionaries, for attempting to impose radical change without their colonists’ consent. With The Cause, Ellis takes a fresh look at the events between 1773 and 1783.

Excellent in Every Respect
Revisado: 05-10-22
Joe Ellis is a premier writer of the Colonial and Revolutionary War era in America. This books lives up to his other books and more. I highly recommend. Tightly written, this book lays out both sides of the conflict, gives insight to the mindsets of those in charge, and describes with probity the relative strengths and weaknesses of the belligerents. It is a refreshing look at the era prior to and during the Revolutionary War.
My only criticism is towards the narrator, whose soft tone comes across as muffled at times. But that could be due to my hearing rather than the narrator himself. Otherwise, the narration was fine. It should not hold one back from listening to this book.

Historia
Historians have long told the story of America’s birth as the triumph of Jefferson’s democratic ideals over the aristocratic intentions of Hamilton. Chernow presents an entirely different man, whose legendary ambitions were motivated not merely by self-interest but by passionate patriotism and a stubborn will to build the foundations of American prosperity and power.

Well written and researched but there are flaws
Revisado: 03-03-22
I recommend this book. It is written well, the research is solid, and Chernow did very well to weave together an enormous amount of primary and secondary materials to to make a cohesive work.
But, it is too long, at least for my liking, and should have been cut down--something more than an edit and something less than a good whacking. Additionally, I think Chernow fell in love with his subject and thereby lost some of his objectivity. That is not to say that Hamilton was anything less than extraordinary. But Chernow takes on the persona of Hamilton himself and shows an obvious dislike of certain persons such as Adams, Jefferson, Jay and the like. I would have preferred something more objective.
That said, it is worth taking the time to either read or listen to this work--even though it may take a very long to do so. It is good history. But I believe that Chernow's book on Washington was a better book. I was a fan of it. Hamilton is no Washington and if one had the choice to read one or the other, I'd go with Washington.

For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

This book seemed hurried to press and haphazardly written. It does not give much of an overall perspective. It barely mentions vaccines. Also, the narration was just “ok.” Pass on this one.
