Historia
Hailed as the father of the naturalist novel, French author and playwright Honoré de Balzac left a legacy of treasured literary works that include Père Goriot and Cousin Bette. The daughter of a wealthy but miserly man, Eugénie Grandet falls in love with her penniless cousin, Charles. The two plan to marry, but at the behest of her father, Charles must first go overseas to make his fortune. Returning years later, Charles calls off the engagement, leaving Eugénie heartbroken and vengeful.

oh god no

the reader is American and you do not want to hear Balzac's characters speaking with a South America accent. because if this he completely misses the irony, the point, the juice in the story.
the novel is great ( I mean, it's Balzac), the reading is horrible

Historia
The Bette referred to in this magnificent novel's title is Lisbeth Fischer, an excruciatingly cunning poor relation who both depends upon and nurses a terrible grudge against the family of her beautiful cousin, Adeline. That family is slowly being ruined by the uncontrollable sexual appetites of Adeline's husband, Baron Hulot - appetites that will, in time, give Cousin Bette opportunity to exact her vengeance.

I absolutely loved this book and listen to it often.
the reader is probably a French speaker as well, as the pronunciation of French names, location and various other words is perfect.
absolutely recommend it :)

the book is read by the author himself so brace yourself for a strong Scottish accent - colourful, interesting and hard to understand at times.
he starts the book by telling you why people like him do not write books and the proceed to show why people like him should absolutely write books.
on the other hand I myself originate in Eastern Europe - so his story brings nothing new on my horizon and the fact that he glorifies people who came out of the poverty in some way and makes them sound like heroes of the 21st century is a bit ... over the top. I know many others who did, many others who didn't, and it's nothing new, nothing amazing with it. but it might be new for you, so go ahead and listen to it - it's not a complete waste of time.
the book is not about poverty, it is about him with some powerful images and well chosen words, in poverty.

Historia
The question of who is entrusted to guide the royals has never been more vital, and yet the task those courtiers face has never been more challenging. With a cloud hanging over Prince Andrew, as well as Harry and Meghan's departure from royal life, the complex relationship between modern courtiers and royal principals has been exposed to global scrutiny. Courtiers pulls back the veil to reveal an ever-changing system of complex characters, shifting values and a battle of ideas over what the future of the institution should be.

Well written and worth your time
Revisado: 10-13-22
if you are here for a book about Harry and Meghan, you're in the wrong place.
however, if you are here for a well researched, well written and balanced book - then just lay back and enjoy it.
I enjoyed the fact that the author himself read it - I always enjoy that, I feel it gives the author the possibility to convey exactly what they meant when writing l. and I was pleasantly surprised by the opinions expressed - Valentine Lowe can sometimes be the devil's advocate. I would give it an even higher rating if any higher rating was available.

Historia
The principal theme of this ambitious book is time, threading together three generations of the Pargiter family. The story begins on a day in 1880 in the household of Colonel Abel Pargiter, his dying wife, and their seven children, and it ends in the 1930s with a brilliantly depicted party at which the Pargiters, young and old, pass in review. Important events - births, deaths, marriages, wars - occur in the wings; it is the commonplace moments that are captured here in a sequence of perfectly drawn scenes.

everybody's a bit senile
Revisado: 05-09-21
every last character in the book is slightly senile, complaining that nobody else is interesting, while not bothering to actually listen to whatever someone else is saying.
nobody is given the right to think a thought from start to finish, the timeline jump and the focus constantly changes.
the reader does not have the time to actually see a character, only a confused mass of people, each thinking that the others are either too dull or too inteligent.
while it is supposed to be a book about changes through decades, the differences are not actually articulated, the struggles are not named ( what was Rose fighting for? nobody knows) and the outside of the characters existance is not present. only random thoughts of people who lost at life.
I finished listening to it only so I could review it ( and because I am stubborn).
verdict : don't bother.

Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from.Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, Malorie has long dreamed of fleeing to a place where her family might be safe. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: 20 miles downriver in a rowboat blindfolded with nothing to rely on but Malorie's wits and the children's trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them....

I listened to it because there is a big hype surrounding it at the moment. the book is neither well written, nor well imagined. a man writing about a woman in labour is quite something - and it is off on so many details. so, mneah - I wouldn't recommend it.
