With a cheesy plot and terrible ending, I'd be livid if I spent anything. As of now, I'm just disappointed in the writer.

Heavy Handed Politics Gets Tiring

The number of times I listened to a sentence along the lines of "I'm not a political person, but..." then Ledger goes on a political rant is really tiring. This series used to be just fun, but it keeps trying to be topical and really makes me want to pull my hair out.

Ray Porter was good as always, though it feels like even he is a bit tired of it. That could be direction from the author on how to talk for characters or just that he reads a lot, I don't know. Overall, this is just a miss for me.

This was fine and kind of creepy until the police show up and act completely unreasonable, because of course it's about race. It then devolves into the main character, who is African American, ranting at his friend who took him in, who is white, that white people are the problem. The character pretty much goes "yep" and at that point I stopped.

This turned from creepy into a joke in one episode. The premise is so off the rails and unlikely that I just couldn't sit through it.

I won't keep this long except to say there is no agenda or anti-trans material whatsoever in this book - it's from the perspective of someone who is very supportive of that lifestyle. Yes, it mentions JK Rowling, in the same context that someone (the character, a 19 year old girl) might when talking about stories she likes, or specifically big, long stories. That's it. Any reviewer who makes any sort of upset about it is ridiculous.

As for the book itself, the narration was great. The story was okay, and wrapped everything up.

These are some weird Italians

After 35 years of being an Italian American, I can confidently say I've never compared the solution to a difficult situation or an emotion in my life to "a good linguine", but that happens at least three times in the first couple of hours.

That's only one example of just very strange writing where the whole thing seems forced, unnecessary, and generally awkward. While Ray Porter does a good job like always, this was a generally rare miss for Smith. I guess go ahead and read it if you care about the series, but if you're not super invested then you can go read off of the Olive Garden menu and think about crappy versions of mob movies to get the same result.

The book is interesting, but if the narrator could turn off sarcasm for just a little bit then I might not want to bang my head against the wall.

Normally I can at least get through a book I'm not enjoying, but not this one.

Save your time and skip this one.

Like most of you that might read this, I've gone through most (if not all) of the Extinction series. They are similar enough that you know what to expect and what you're getting, so that still applies.

This time around, though, it just doesn't hold water. The characters are difficult to care for and the plot is very convoluted. As much as I hate saying it, I would skip this one.

It sounds like the narrator is actually Windows Voice to Text. It's impossible to ignore, so I have no idea about the story, but you should try the book instead.

A few months ago, my life was forever changed by loss. While not new to death, I was new to this level of depression, and confusion, and despair. Nothing I read or talked about could quite encapsulate it, and I did my best to push it down. In fact, I delayed listening to this for quite some time.

Three months later, I am not better, but I could finally queue this up. In it, we hear Daniels cover one of the most important, private, and devastating things that we can face in life, and the similarities were staggering. I had to stop this quite a few times to take a break, breathe, or even go cry. It was a hard listen, but at the end I can take a bit of solace to know that I'm not alone in the way I cope, and that somehow there IS a way to cope.

You won't find answers in this book, but that's okay - I wasn't expecting any. Instead, you'll hear a painful story about grief and getting by, and although that might hit all of the wrong emotions, sometimes acknowledging those emotions is enough to start to help.

Thank you, Luke, for sharing this with the world.
