Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Couldn’t stop listening. This story was so intriguing and interesting. At first I was intimidated by so many different characters— but they were all so recognizable I felt like I knew each one. And I loved how their lives intertwined.
Julia Whelan is my favorite narrator.

Historia
In the pretty, privileged college town of Milford, New Hampshire, everyone is friendly, and everything is safe. And on this cold autumn day, as red and yellow leaves begin to fall from the trees, and everyone wraps up for the first time, it would be easy to believe nothing bad could ever happen here. Until a screech of tires is heard, a thud, a child’s scream. The crash that sees Jenna’s six-year-old daughter, Amy Rose, being hit by a car driven by 17-year-old Maddie.

My husband and I listened to this together. We almost stopped because Ellen was such a privileged helicopter mom. So glad we stayed with it. The story was amazing. Lots of twists and turns. The characters became so real.
The narrator was so good. We could picture each character and the emotions they were feeling.
This book would make a great book club discussion.

This deliciously sharp novel captures the relentless ambitions and fears that animate parents and their children in modern America, exploring the conflicts between achievement and potential, talent and privilege. Set in the fictional town of Crystal, Colorado, The Gifted School is a keenly entertaining novel that observes the drama within a community of friends and parents as good intentions and high ambitions collide in a pile-up with long-held secrets and lies.

A glimpse of what parents are going though now
Revisado: 08-12-19
I really enjoyed listening to this book. It made me look back on what I went though with my own children and how different is is now with all of the technology and social media influence. The pressures on both the parents and the children are felt in detail.
The narration was excellent.
One suggestion -- I had trouble keeping track of the characters so I made a chart of the parents and their children. It really helped.

One afternoon, not long after Kelly Thorndike has moved back to his hometown of Baltimore, an African American man he doesn't recognize calls out to him. To Kelly's shock, the man identifies himself as Martin, who was one of Kelly's closest friends in high school - and, before his disappearance nearly 20 years before, skinny, white, and Jewish. Martin then tells an astonishing story: he's had a plastic surgeon perform 'racial reassignment surgery.'

Is this really the future?
Revisado: 03-08-15
As the review I read said: this book started out as an interesting little story and quickly took off into the bizarre. Imagine a future where you can make yourself look like the person you know yourself to be. What a lively conversation this would be for a book club. T
The writing was amazing. Sometimes I felt that it was above my level. I'm not sure I understood everything that was going on. But I truly enjoyed the book anyway.
The narrator was one of the best. He subtly changed from character to character so that I had no trouble knowing who was speaking. The Amazon review said that the printed book was difficult because the author did not use quotation marks-- so, I guess, this was better as an audio book. But I always feel audio books are better.

Historia
For four years, from the election of John Fitzgerald Kennedy until after the election of Lyndon Johnson, Clint Hill was the Secret Service agent assigned to guard the glamorous and private Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. During those four years, he went from being a reluctant guardian to a fiercely loyal watchdog and friend. Looking back, Clint Hill tells his story for the first time, offering a tender and tragic portrayal of how a Secret Service agent who started life in an orphanage became the most trusted man in the life of the First Lady who captivated first the nation and then the world.

A different insight into a well-known story
Revisado: 02-04-13
If you could sum up Mrs. Kennedy and Me in three words, what would they be?
A dedicated professional
Who was your favorite character and why?
Clint Hill gives a first person account of his amazing years with the Kennedy family in the White house. I never really thought about the difficult and dedicated job of the Secret Service. The SS must leave their own family to travel for long periods of time, during holidays, etc. They had to protect the family at all times. Originally disappointed because he was "only" with Mrs. Kennedy and not the president, he came to respect and admire her. His emotional account of the days surrounding the Kennedy assassination is written from a perspective very few can give.
Which character – as performed by Jeremy Bobb – was your favorite?
The subtle change of the narrator's voice when he spoke as Mrs. Kennedy was enthralling. You knew each character by his inflections.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
He had to live with the rich and famous on $16 a day.
Any additional comments?
Anyone who has read the many stories and theories around the Kennedy assignation will want to read this account from someone who had an personal relationship with the first-family.

Cute for young girls. Not for Jodi Picoult fans.
Revisado: 10-20-12
If you could sum up Between the Lines in three words, what would they be?
Interesting story twist.
Would you be willing to try another book from Jodi Picoult and Samantha Van Leer ? Why or why not?
I am a big Jodi Picoult fan and I got this book because of her. If you are looking for a book with her typical insight into unusual social issues you will be disappointed. This is a cute story but not a typical Jodi book.
I almost quit in the beginning because it was a silly "Disney" type story. I'm glad I kept listening. The characters developed and I enjoyed the story in the end. It is definitely designed for VERY young girls, but I enjoyed it like a bit of sweetness for a change.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The narration was excellent.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I usually listen at 1.5 speed. I could listen to this at 2.0 or 3.0 so it made it a quick listen.
Any additional comments?
I would not get another book from Jodi in this YA venue, but I'm not sorry I used my credit.

Very disappointing
Revisado: 08-17-05
Jodi Picoult is one of my favorite authors and I couldn't wait to listen to this book. Boy was I disappointed! The plot was built around an interesting premise (a father who kidnapped his own daughter twenty-eight years earlier) but the characters were unbelieveable and unlikeable. I really didn't care what happened to them. In the other books (My Sister's Keeper, Second Glance, Plain Truth) all of the characters were so realistic and likeable that I followed each twist of the plot anxiously. In this book, I really didn't care what happened to anyone.
By the way, many reviewers liked the cast of narrators in Vanishing Acts. I found them too slow and sappy. I much prefered the single narrator in Second Glance who developed each character with a professional, distict voice.
