When she first went to sea in April of 1961, the US nuclear submarine Thresher was the most advanced submarine at sea, built specifically to hunt and kill Soviet submarines. In The Death of the USS Thresher, renowned naval and intelligence consultant Norman Polmar recounts the dramatic circumstances surrounding her implosion, which killed all 129 men onboard in history's first loss of a nuclear submarine.

Historia
Although he took command of the Army of the Potomac only three days before the first shots were fired at Gettysburg, Union general George G. Meade guided his forces to victory in the Civil War's most pivotal battle. Commentators often dismiss Meade when discussing the great leaders of the Civil War. But in this long-anticipated book, Kent Masterson Brown draws on an expansive archive to reappraise Meade's leadership during the Battle of Gettysburg.

A great narrative read about Meade and leadership. I like detail in narrative form and this is among the very best. Never lost in movements of men or in retelling of events, it leads you play by significant play from Meades point of view,.
He sources details from so many letters of officers and men that give powerful realtime assessments that propel the narrative as well as assessments. I learn so much more than I thought I had already known.
And his after battle historical assessment/narrative was superior; ending it with General Hunts letter caps a storytellers touch on a great book. Highly highly recommend it for leadership students as well as Civik War and Gettysburg students; even a young academic looking for term research paper topic. Yes , narrator made it great too. I will buy the book.

Historia
After the bloodbath of Butcher’s Moon, the action-filled blowout Parker adventure, Donald Westlake said, “Richard Stark proved to me that he had a life of his own by simply disappearing. He was gone.” But nothing bad is truly gone forever, and Parker’s as bad as they come. According to Westlake, one day in 1997, “suddenly, he came back from the dead” - and the resulting novel, Comeback, showed that neither Stark nor Parker had lost a single step. Knocking over a highly lucrative religious revival show, Parker reminds us that not all criminals don ski masks.

Whole package was solid, not expecting to enjoy so tight a close situation. But Parker- Stark- Westlake. Can’t be beat especially with the right narrator.

Historia
Admittedly small and vulnerable, PT boats were, nevertheless, fast - the fastest craft on the water during World War II - and Dick Keresey's account of these tough little fighters throws new light on their contributions to the war effort. As captain of PT 105, the author was in the same battle as John F. Kennedy when Kennedy's PT 109 was rammed and sunk. The famous incident, Keresey says, has often been described inaccurately and the PT boat depicted as unreliable and ineffective.

Learned many tidbits about young officers and the naval war in the Solomons. Moving ending. Narrator was spot on, in sync with the text I bet he conveyed the authors personality accurately If you lived PT Boat stories as a kid as I did, you’ll enjoy this.

Historia
At the outset of the Battle of the Wilderness, General Lee's Army of Northern Virginia remained capable of defeating the Army of the Potomac. After two days of relentless fighting in dense Virginia woods, Robert E. Lee was never again able to launch offensive operations against Grant's army. This battle was one of the most gruesome in American history. The impenetrable forest and gunfire smoke made it impossible to view the enemy. Officers couldn't see their own men during the fighting. The incessant gunfire caused the woods to catch fire, resulting in hundreds of men burning to death.

A great read and right toned narration. Knew barebones of story, but now assured of narrative flow of that fight. The personal touches of personality work very well. The issues between Sheridan Warren and others were a revelation for me; as was Wadsworth story. Unexpected detail and moving facts at the end about Arlington Vemetary. Book wraps well as a good narrative history should. A real keeper of an audiobook.

Historia
An ancient brotherhood meets annually in the back room of a swank Manhattan restaurant, a fraternity created in secret to celebrate life by celebrating its dead. But the past three decades have not been kind to the Club of 31. Matthew Scudder - ex-cop and ex-boozer - has known death in all its guises, which is why he has been asked to investigate a baffling thirty-year run of suicides and suspiciously random accidents that has thinned the ranks of this very select group of gentlemen.

From beginning to end, don’t want to put it down; not overly exciting or thrilling but a compelling urgent story that has you “turning the pages” again and again. I agree about the right ending. Worthwhile especially as this was a free audible book.

Historia
With Allied armies poised on the banks of the Rhine, Nazi Germany tottered on the brink of collapse. The ensuing battles on German soil - especially those in the so-called Ruhr Pocket - were as fierce and hard-fought as any in the European theater. Going well beyond previous accounts, Derek S. Zumbro chronicles this key military campaign from a unique and fresh perspective - that of the defeated German soldiers and civilians caught in the final maelstrom of the war's Western front.

Detailed thorough narrative

If already a WWII buff, you will like the detail. My first best accounting of the German civilian side of the last stages of the war. Didn’t expect this much narrative of individual soldiers officers, town leaders etc but once I settled into what this book was; I was taken by the journey it offered. Surprised.

Historia
First published in 1875, General William T. Sherman's memoir was one of the first from the Civil War and was offered to the public because, as Sherman wrote in his dedication, "no satisfactory history" of the war was yet available. Although Memoirs has been revised and corrected many times over the years, Sherman famously never changed the original text of his recollections.

Unexpectedly superb in content by Sherman and also by the tone set by narratir, the actor Bronson Pinchot who I still remember from Eddie Murpys’80s movies. Going to buy a book version and hear this one again in near future. Grateful for the complete letters and orders and dispatches that Sherman enclosed in his memoirs. Insightful to someone who knew less of the war in the west than the war in Virginia.

Historia
Andrew Roberts' Napoleon is the first one-volume biography to take advantage of the recent publication of Napoleon's thirty-three thousand letters, which radically transform our understanding of his character and motivation. At last we see him as he was: protean multitasker, decisive, surprisingly willing to forgive his enemies and his errant wife Josephine.
