Favorite Episode
Revisado: 07-29-23
This episode is stellar, my favorite from the whole series. I’ve listened to this one multiple times. I used to be a children’s bookseller, so I’ve interacted with a lot of illustration. It’s hard to believe I haven’t seen a physical copy of the book in this story. The words painted pictures in my mind in a way I’ve never experienced before. Love this whole series!

Historia
The stockings are hanging ready, the sherry and pies are waiting by the fireplace - but where is the jolly fat man with his sack? It's not right to find Death creeping down chimneys and trying to say 'Ho ho ho'—but someone's got to bring the little kiddies their presents. Or else they might stop believing. Belief is important in Discworld, particularly on the last night of the year when the time is turning. If the real man in the red suit isn't found by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again....

Why is it I can never look up the Nigel Planer ones I bought?
Revisado: 11-20-22
Nigel Planer isn’t as good as Briggs by a stretch but he’s light years better than this. I’m going back to the old version. Thought I’d give this a chance but what were they thinking?!

Historia
On the evening of November 24, 1971, D. B. Cooper hijacked Flight 305—Portland to Seattle—with a fake bomb, collected a ransom of $200,000, and then parachuted from the rear of the plane, disappearing into the night...and into history. Fifty years later, Agent Pendergast takes on a bizarre and gruesome case: in the ghost-haunted city of Savannah, Georgia, bodies are found with no blood left in their veins—sowing panic and reviving whispered tales of the infamous Savannah Vampire.

Wait until they redo the narrator
Revisado: 11-15-21
Anyone who has listened long term is going to HATE this reader’s horrible choice of voice for Constance Green. Seriously awful nasal old uptight whinging New England spinster is what he went with. Not the voice of a strangely attractive over educated young woman from New York City. I’m returning it.

Historia
As a massive outbreak of supernatural visitors baffles Scotland Yard and causes protests throughout London, Lockwood & Co. continue to demonstrate their effectiveness in exterminating spirits. Anthony Lockwood is dashing, George insightful, and Lucy dynamic, while the skull in the jar utters sardonic advice from the sidelines.

So good.
Revisado: 05-19-17
Not a lot of stories hold up to repeated listenings. So far the entire Lockwood Series does. The quality of the writing, the appeal and depth of character, the building mystery, all of these are outstanding and the reader is solid in skill and voice. Few modern books present the thrilling appeal of Victorian ghost stories with the underlying sense of wonder that makes them unique, exciting, and addictive. Lockhart & Co. absolutely does with the added appeal of Stroud's sardonic humor. Worth reading/listening to again and again and again.

Read/Listen to the Final Drafts Instead
Revisado: 01-11-12
Would you try another book from Agatha Christie and/or David Suchet?
I've listened to nearly all of them and every one is better than this one.
Was 'The Capture of Cerberus' and 'The Incident of the Dog's Ball' worth the listening time?
No.
Any additional comments?
I do not recommend this Christie. I love Agatha Christie, I love David Suchet. I own almost every audiobook (I have yet to download the most recent releases) available, and have also physically read (and own) most of her books.

Historia
Behind the gates of a fabulous Hampton estate, FBI Special Agent Pendergast discovers the carnage of a gruesome crime, a nightmare of seemingly supernatural origin. The smoldering remains of infamous art critic Jeremy Grove, a melted cross branding his chest, are found in a locked, barricaded attic. The hoofprint singed into the floorboards and the smell of brimstone recall the legendary horrors that befall those who make a pact with the Devil.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I love the Pendergast books. They are a guilty pleasure but thoroughly thrilling with enough intellectual elements to be stimulating.
Any additional comments?
The unabridged version loses way too much, particularly since elements build on each other in the series and something unimportant to the current story may turn out to have relevance later on.

What made the experience of listening to The Historian the most enjoyable?
The narrators are excellent.
What did you like best about this story?
In its complete form this story is fantastic, full of fascinating detail, place descriptions and characterization.
Any additional comments?
I read this book after hearing an interview with the author on the Diane Rehm show. I loved it. I didn't realize I was getting the abridged version, which I never do.

The reader for this was so dreadful that I decided I'd have to read the book in paper, it is still waiting to be read because my list is very long.

These five chilling tales make perfect night time listening - and, for the fearful, can be heard in a group, rather than experienced as solo bedtime reading. Charles Dickens, Wilkie Collins, W. L. George, A. M. Burrage, and Guy de Maupassant provide the terrifying text; Ian Holm and Julie Peasgood provide the spoken spooks.

The Signalman. . . again
Revisado: 09-19-09
As you can tell by my title, I am rather tired of Dickens' the Signalman, there are many other less overused classic ghost stories and one of them could have been used in place of Dickens, after all, there are only 5 stories.

If only it didn't have the Signalman
Revisado: 09-19-09
These are a great selection of stories, but I am rather sick of "The Signalman" by Charles Dickens, it's in far too many collections.
