Historia
In this groundbreaking new work, Mark Booth embarks on an enthralling intellectual tour of our world's secret histories. Starting from a dangerous premise - that everything we've been taught about our world's past is corrupted, and that the stories put forward by the various cults and mystery schools throughout history are true - Booth produces nothing short of an alternate history of the past 3,000 years.

Pathetic, historically inaccurate nonsense
Revisado: 01-16-25
This book was absolute shite. I'm fascinated by historical inaccuracies and perspectives that have been lost because of inexperience, e.g. most Americans in the current century have no idea what wash day was like for people 100 years ago. I was excited to check it out.
The narrator is a great reader and performer. It's the only thing that kept me listening.
There are good bits in there, but nothing that was new for me. The inaccuracies were many, vast and so insulting. Some of the mental leaps they wanted us to make were too large and not supported by the evidence given.
The best thing I can say is that I'm so happy this was free and I only wasted my time and not my money.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I needed this book.
Revisado: 05-16-23
I thought I was going to learn about how to reconcile my feelings about loving the work of monstrous humans. Instead I learned how to reconcile my place in the world as a monster.
Poignant, honest, brave, thoughtful and beautifully written, I've been waiting for this book for years.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

A smart teen's daydream
Revisado: 12-04-22
I read this because it was Barnes and Nobles book of the year.
This book was okay. I wanted to love it. It felt like a smart kid's daydream. They couldn't make it too happy, because that would feel fake. It still had to be cool, e.g. 6:30, so that it still felt like a fantasy.
I don't regret reading the book. Not a waste of time. But, I could have had this fantasy without any help from the author.

Historia
Acclaimed scientist Hope Jahren has built three laboratories in which she's studied trees, flowers, seeds, and soil. Her first book might have been a revelatory treatise on plant life. Lab Girl is that, but it is also so much more. Because in it, Jahren also shares with us her inspiring life story, in prose that takes your breath away.

boring
Revisado: 10-11-19
boring, trope-y, and lame
I had to think of an additional sentence to write, because reviews require more than four words. That's how boring it was. So boring.

Brilliant offers a sweeping view of a surprisingly revealing aspect of human history - from the stone lamps of the Pleistocene to the LEDs embedded in fabrics of the future. Jane Brox plumbs the class implications of light - who had it, who didn't - through the many centuries when crude lamps and tallow candles constricted waking hours. Brillant is infused with human voices, startling insights, and - only a few years before it becomes illegal to sell most incandescent light bulbs in the United States - timely questions about how our future lives will be shaped by light.

Lots of lists with a new perspective of modernity.
Revisado: 05-23-19
This book starts out slowly. I bought it because it was cheap and I had no historical context to put the evolution of artificial light into.
I have certainly gained context. I am going to be checking out some of the books referenced in this one. I always feel a much deeper understanding of humanity when I gain insight into what most of our past was like. I always feel a much deeper connection to humanity when prejudices and real obstacles are laid out for me to see.
The interconnectedness of our own feelings of imagined safety combine with what seems like simple technologies to have huge impacts on the environment and the ever increasing gap between the rich and the poor. The often simple solutions to massive problems and a brief glimpse at a few of the inspired thinkers make the boring lists and the acceptable narrator worth your time.
