Historia
Saburo Sakai became a living legend in Japan during World War II. Pilots everywhere spoke in awe of his incredible exploits in the air. Of all Japan’s aces, Saburo Sakai is the only pilot who never lost a wingman in combat. For a man who engaged in more than 200 aerial combats, this was an incredible achievement. His remarkable book Samurai! written by Martin Caiden but with the assistance of Sakai and Fred Saito is a brilliant account of life as a Japanese pilot in the Second World War.

Interesting story—TERRIBLE narration
Revisado: 01-08-20
It was Very difficult to get past the narrator in the story. At times it really sounded like it was computer animated, considering the absolute lack of flow, appropriate intonation, phrasing or spacing. It seemed like any word of three syllables or greater was likely to be butchered or perhaps completely supplanted for a more familiar but incorrect word.
This is the first time I’ve left a review like this – – it was that bad. If I wasn’t extremely interested in the story, and if the story itself and not been captivating, I definitely would’ve given up and returned the book – – but these specific types of stories are hard to come by in an audible format so I stuck with it and gritted my teeth. I am quite certain that seeing the narrator’s name on any other book will be enough to dissuade me from purchasing it. I really can’t imagine that any editor listened to the narration before approving it for distribution. It is embarrassingly poor.
I quite enjoyed the story itself. I’ve read quite a bit of military history and memoirs, but this is the first from the perspective of a Japanese aviator.

Historia
Young men who dream of becoming heroes look to West Point - to a career dedicated to serving their country. The Class of 1966 was no exception, but in the course of their military training and careers, these cadets faced a far greater challenge then ever before imagined. President Kennedy had called for a new kind of officer, prepared to fight a new kind of war, and during their years of rigorous academic and military training, the men of '66 heard the thunder of Vietnam growing ever more loudly.

Doesn’t do it justice
Revisado: 09-07-19
I read The Long Gray Line many years ago, and it really struck me as an excellent book all around by a new (to me) author.
I always wanted to re-read it, but I have less time now than I did back then. Once I started using Audible I realized that I could re-read it, but was disappointed to see it is an abridged version. I resisted the abridged version for a year or two and then decided to give it a try. I should’ve stuck with my original instincts. It is a pale, pale comparison to the full book. I ended up returning it. I have no idea why they chose to use an abridged version – – I wish they would bring out the full one.

Historia
Here, in his own words, is the true story of America's wildest flying hero, of his extraordinary heroism, and of his greatest battle of all-the fight to survive. The World War II air war in the Pacific needed tough men like Colonel Pappy Boyington and his Black Sheep Squadron. The legendary Marine Corps officer and his bunch of misfits, outcasts, and daredevils gave a new definition to "hell-raising" - on the ground and in the skies.

Who picked the narrator?
Revisado: 08-21-19
I’ve read/heard books narrated by Eric Martin before, but none happily. That being said, I can’t imagine a more incongruous pairing than Eric Marin and Pappy Boyington. Martin is full of affectation, and, seemingly, himself. The opposite of a hard-drinking, hell-raising Marine fighter ace. As much as I wanted to reD the book, if I’d noticed it was Martin, I might’ve waited until summer and read a hard copy version.

Historia
As one of al-Qaeda's most respected bomb-makers, Aimen Dean rubbed shoulders with the mastermind of the 9/11 attacks and swore allegiance to Osama bin Laden himself. As a double agent at the heart of al-Qaeda's chemical weapons program, he foiled attacks on civilians and saved countless lives, brushing with death so often that his handlers began to call him their spy with nine lives. This is the story of how a young Muslim, determined to defend his faith, found himself fighting on the wrong side - and his fateful decision to work undercover for his sworn enemy.

Good, not great
Revisado: 09-08-18
An interesting story of a jihadi turned spy turned erstwhile reformer. As an in-depth and up close look into the mindset of the Islamist terrorist movement, it is pretty compelling. There is no doubt that this is a brave and good man who has significantly contributed to the cause of preventing terrorist plots and action.
It’s not exactly a swashbuckling spy story with lots of action or close calls. My guess is that is probably the pretty typical life of a true spy.

Interesting, not thrilling
Revisado: 05-07-18
A good and interesting account of a KGB “illegal,” the riskiest type of spy. The hope of the KGB was that their obviously bright and talented recruit would make it to the top echelons of western society. That never happened, and so it’s not really a page-turner, but those interested in the genre will like it nonetheless.

Historia
By January 1968, despite an influx of half a million American troops, the fighting in Vietnam seemed to be at a stalemate. Yet General William Westmoreland, commander of American forces, announced a new phase of the war in which "the end begins to come into view". The North Vietnamese had different ideas. In mid-1967, the leadership in Hanoi had started planning an offensive intended to win the war in a single stroke.

Good perspective
Revisado: 08-02-17
I believe the author is correct in that the subject of this book had not been properly contextualized or understood by most Americans, and even those interested in the history of the Vietnam war. I have read many books about this conflict, yet didn't fully appreciate the import of the battle at Hue.
Bowden doesn't excellent job of researching the actors, and includes many VC and NVA sources and perspectives.
It's not a "page turner" in the manner of Black Hawk Down, but it is definitely worth your time, and well performed.
