For a layperson such as myself, this book seems like a pretty good introduction to the history of indigenous Australians both during and after colonization, but I would have liked a bit more insight on the native people's culture, religion, and tribal structure. Still, it seems like a pretty good starting point.

Book seven is not out yet. I put off listening to this one because I knew shirtaloon had a thing for cliffhangers, but this somehow managed to be both satisfying AND aggravating because I can't listen to book seven right the heck now.

Have I mentioned that Stash is my absolute favorite character in this series? The writing in the epilog was particularly brilliant, hence my burning desire for immediate continuation.

Please record quickly, Mr. Miller. I require fuel for my addiction.

How dare you. >:(

(I wanted to end my review there, but apparently I have to write at least 15 words, so have some extra praise. I did not think I would enjoy this series so much, but now I can't stop listening.)

Also, I have to say that your cover artist is absolutely stellar!! Gorgeous work!

I like the plot and the characters, but for some reason I kept zoning out while listening. Maybe the rhythm/cadence of the narration? Idk.

Engaging and informative! I was born in the mid 80s, so I missed the deeper aspects of the AIDS epidemic. This clarifies a lot of details I couldn't possibly have understood as a kid.

First off, the overall plot is very similar to Rise of the Shield Hero - not a bad thing! I love reading new takes on familiar tropes or themes. The story is entertaining and light enough that I was able to listen while doing crafts.

The problem for me is twofold. First, the slavery. I don't like it in Shield Hero and I don't like it here, but I don't expect a Japanese author to consider the topic's sensitive history in the US. I just didn't feel like the MC was as pissed off as he should have been, especially after being at the mercy of someone else for so long.

I know individual master/slave dynamic can be fun and consentual, but there, you run into my second problem. Creep factor. Even if he looks like a teen, MC is mentally in his 30s, while his flock of cute female companions range from 12 to 16. Any way you try to swing that, it's creepy. It's like a bunch of middle school kids crushing on a teacher and calling him "master." It's weird.

I know MC hasn't done anything with them and states several times that he won't, but the girls seem dead serious about changing his mind, and I'm over here like: "No - No, honey you're twelve. Stop. Please."

Last issue I had was with the narration. The reader tends to pause in strange places or place stress on odd words. It wasn't a deal breaker, but it was mildly distracting.

So, again, not terrible. Not the best, but not the worst either. Solid C+ overall.

Very enjoyable read, but about half way through, the MC makes a chain of increasingly irritating decisions which left me screaming internally. Like, it's enjoyable, and I love the world and the characters, but damn, that betrayal hit hard. Then he's like "Welp, might as well loot the place, too - twice."

I sympathize with the locals, but MC had more meaningful interactions with his unit than most of the humans we've seen. I do like that the deer lady refused to reorder her entire existence just to date him, though. That was refreshing. So yeah, love the book, but I really want to punch the MC in the face.

So much salamander goodness. I love the isekai vibe awakening and all the anomalies that hint at what actually happened to the main character. It's interesting, entertaining, and engaging and I definitely want to read more!

Eh. Bit too much yelling from the narrator. Also, it's a typical male power fantasy with ladies who can't act without a male to guide them. There's no character development, and the antagonists are pretty much all cookie cutter evil aristocrats except for that one assassin. Still, it was a nice simple story to listen to while doing other tasks. If you've read Russian litRPG novels, you should know what to expect. Not sure if I'll get the next volume. We'll see.

This is probably the best litrpg story I've read in over a year, and I read a LOT of novels. Fifty points for believable female characters with their own lives and ambitions, fifty points for lack of superfluous romance, and two hundred points for the thing with the fairies. I loved the clever interface system, the growth mechanics, and the hero's personality. I can't wait for the next installment! I'm also curious about what is going to happen to those three unsuspecting geeks. Perfect opportunity for a side isekai novel!
