She completely describes and validates all those crazy doubts we keep to ourselves when it comes to friendships and love. Bravo...insightful story with more than a sprinkle of humor.

Historia
The final novel from a great American storyteller. Donal Cameron is being raised by his grandmother, the cook at the legendary Double W ranch in Ivan Doig's beloved Two Medicine Country of the Montana Rockies, a landscape that gives full rein to an 11-year-old's imagination. But when Gram has to have surgery for "female trouble" in the summer of 1951, all she can think to do is to ship Donal off to her sister in faraway Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

As always, great story and characters. Narration was superb. Doig always catches the spirit of Montana in his writings. Pure enjoyment.

cannot get into the story because of the narrator
Revisado: 04-13-22
Could not finish. The narrator has no inflection in her voice and all I could hear was her droning on and on. It is probably unfair to rate the story so low, but since I couldn't find any interest in it because of the narrator, there was nothing else to do. Quite a disappointment. I may try reading Sue Graftons books rather than listening to them.

Backman has done it once more
Revisado: 10-23-21
Backman has such a talent for acknowledging the weaknesses and strengths in all of us....those that we rarely, if ever, share. He does it with empathy and a huge dose of humor. Each of his books have made me cry, laugh and think about who I am as a part of this human race....and who I want to be.

Historia
In North Devon, where two rivers converge and run into the sea, Detective Matthew Venn stands outside the church as his estranged father’s funeral takes place. On the day Matthew left the strict evangelical community he grew up in, he lost his family, too. Now, as he turns and walks away again, he receives a call from one of his team. A body has been found on the beach nearby: A man with a tattoo of an albatross on his neck, stabbed to death.

Good story, terrible narration
Revisado: 01-16-21
The story, like all of Ann Cleeves books, was captivating, but the reader was pretty bad. Mostly monotone with staccato bursts and then pausing in the middle of sentences. While I will continue to enjoy Ann Cleeves, I will not be listening to this narrator again....he makes me grind my teeth.

After a health scare, 77-year-old Barbara goes to convalesce in the sleepy Somerset village of Winsleigh Green with her sister, Pauline, who is now a widow. The sisters are like chalk and cheese - Barbara, outspoken and aloof and Pauline, good natured and homely - so it’s not long before the tension starts to rise. But when Pauline accidentally knocks down a vagrant who goes by the name of Bisto Mulligan, the ladies find themselves with another houseguest.

It has been some time since I read a book that was such a joy! The characters were lovely, the humor invasive, the story line delightful and the performance excellent. I will certainly be listening to the rest of this author's works.

Historia
The Goldfinch is a haunted odyssey through present-day America and a drama of enthralling force and acuity. It begins with a boy. Theo Decker, a 13-year-old New Yorker, miraculously survives an accident that kills his mother. Abandoned by his father, Theo is taken in by the family of a wealthy friend. Bewildered by his strange new home on Park Avenue, disturbed by schoolmates who don't know how to talk to him, and tormented above all by his unbearable longing for his mother, he clings to one thing that reminds him of her: a small, mysteriously captivating painting that ultimately draws Theo into the underworld of art.

So tedious and obviously unedited.
Revisado: 07-14-20
I have never been so glad to finally get to the end of what I had hoped to be a lovely read. There appears to be no editing at all and every bit of knowledge and research the author had of art history was very unnecessarily included...over and over and over again. Reading this prize winning creation was like swimming upstream in a flood. Characters were only poorly developed and I could really feel nothing for any of them. Such an epic disappointment.

Historia
As the true horrors of the Third Reich began to be exposed immediately after World War II, the Nazi war criminals who committed genocide went on the run. A few were soon caught, including the notorious SS leader Heinrich Himmler. Others, however, evaded capture through a sophisticated Nazi organization designed to hide them. Among them were Josef Mengele, the “Angel of Death” who performed hideous medical experiments at Auschwitz; Martin Bormann, Hitler’s brutal personal secretary; Klaus Barbie, the cruel "Butcher of Lyon"; and perhaps the most awful Nazi of all: Adolf Eichmann.

Good story, but...poor narration
Revisado: 09-24-19
Another remarkable insight into history, but Bill O'Reilly's narration was way below the mark. So many mispronounced names and words that it took my focus away from the story at times. He is a remarkable writer, but should not narrate his own books.

Historia
To Christina Olson, the entire world was her family's remote farm in the small coastal town of Cushing, Maine. Born in the home her family had lived in for generations, and increasingly incapacitated by illness, Christina seemed destined for a small life. Instead, for more than 20 years, she was host to and inspiration for the artist Andrew Wyeth and became the subject of one of the best known American paintings of the 20th century.

an insight into the mystery of Christina
Revisado: 04-20-19
I've always loved Christina's World, but also wondered about Christina. Andrew Wyeth is one of my favorite American artists and I have a lovely book of his works. I used that as a reference while listening to this book and the paintings became even more real. The author was able to paint Christina with words and I truly enjoyed her interpretation of the life of Christina Olson.

This lovely book brought me to tears, made me laugh and reminded me that every person we encounter, every heartache we endure and every choice we make is what makes us who we are today. Everyone has a history that is worth knowing.
