Historia
The Grand Hotel is a horror novel by esteemed best-selling author Scott Kenemore ( Zombie, Ohio) that takes the reader on a thrilling ride through an interconnected series of stories narrated by the desk clerk and the residents of the hotel itself. And while it is not known whether or not the desk clerk is actually the devil incarnate, it is strange that so many visitors who come for a tour of the hotel have a way of never leaving.

Roald Dahl-esque.
Revisado: 06-29-24
Well-narrated Roald Dalh-esque tale that will become increasingly clear as you progress. Clearly distinct character voices. The Grand Hotel was an impulse listen and I enjoyed my time.

Revisado: 06-26-24
I had to eject after the first hour. While I have enjoyed some of Ayoade's work, this surreal review of himself became tired very quickly and I just didn't have the care in me to continue on with it.

Historia
Welcome to Black Spring, the seemingly picturesque Hudson Valley town haunted by the Black Rock Witch, a seventeenth century woman whose eyes and mouth are sewn shut. Muzzled, she walks the streets and enters homes at will. She stands next to children's bed for nights on end. Everybody knows that her eyes may never be opened or the consequences will be too terrible to bear.

Unique concept; well voiced.
Revisado: 06-22-24
An intriguing experience concept. While not "scary", it is certainly entertaining and original.
Jeff Harding's narration was enjoyable. His ability to deliver diverse and distinct voices for each character add a layer of immersion.
I do have one critique. As the book was originally written by a Dutch author, it seems that in the translation, the setting and historical context were shifted to fit an American audience. It'd have been more compelling had it retained its original Dutch cultural and historical backdrop. This change felt like a missed opportunity to explore and immerse listeners in a unique cultural perspective that is not often represented in mainstream horror.
Overall, 'Hex' is a recommendation for anyone looking for an entertaining, if not scary, horror story with an original premise.

All about the performance.
Revisado: 06-14-24
An incoherent inner-monologue of someone contemplating doing some very bad things that is only really lifted by Pinchot's terrific performance. I do kind of wish to hear it performed in the voice of a certain Perfect Strangers character, though. That'd be amazing.

Here is a recording of a War Department pamphlet aimed at U.S. Servicemen in Britain in 1942. The jovial tone of the document and its advice about how NOT to offend the British make for a nostalgic - and in places humorous - relic of World War II.

Print version is on the Internet Archive
Revisado: 06-13-24
I know that many people would enjoy to read the print version along with this audio. It is available to check-out for an hour at a time on the Internet Archive. Just search for the title.
More than 80 years later, this should still be an essential manual for "getting along in another country". Understanding general differences, how people are viewed by each other, common expectations, how to behave, how to be considerate and polite within each other's customs.
It should be noted that other versions exist, too, such as "for American Servicemen in France".
This short 34 page guide should have a version between every people on earth. It would make for more polite and respectful consideration of each other, everywhere.
Those aspects aside, this is an interesting peak into what our grandparents or great grandparents likely experienced, if they served. I believe my grandfather served in India and Africa during this time, so he would not have read this manual. I'm sure he had an equivalent, though.
If you're interested in military, history, society, or culture, this is a very brief and entertaining must-listen/read. As for the presentation? It's direct and clear and pleasant. I doubt this was in audio version during the time it was provided to our servicemen, but if it had been, I like to imagine it would sound very similar to this narration.

Historia
Revolutionary singer, songwriter, producer, bandleader, and funk icon George Clinton travels the rich cosmos of his musical history. As the second most sampled artist in the world (right behind James Brown), Clinton examines his incongruous path from delivering milk to Sarah Vaughan on Avon Avenue in Newark, New Jersey, to embodying funk as we know it—from Motown to the Mothership. Clinton’s experiences as the mastermind behind his bands Parliament and Funkadelic and as the foremost authority on all things funk make for a distinctive, humorous, and thoughtful journey through modern music.

Historia
Three low-income families have been given a handsome retainer to join Geraldine Borden for a day at her cliffside estate. All the parents must do to collect the rest of their money is allow their children to test out the revolutionary playground equipment Geraldine has been working on for decades. But there’s a reason the structures in the bowels of her gothic castle have taken so long to develop—they were never meant to see the light of day.

Repulsive and poorly developed.
Revisado: 12-04-23
Playground is a relentless descent into grotesque sex scenes and an overindulgence in torture-porn that isn't earned or justified by the shallow character development and story. This isn't a horror masterpiece; it's a journey into a realm of gratuitous gore; a literary equivalent of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory for degenerates.
Lila Kerry's narration is clear, well pronounced, and for the most part employs good mostly discernable voices for the characters.
