For a man who claims to possess so much all knowing insight Douglas has a major blind spot, his own self awareness. I don’t think he even sees what a petty jerk he comes off as in this self pitying book. A good half the book is his grievances real, imagined, who cares? As for his contribution to various investigations you start to realize it rarely goes beyond common sense. He really does damage to the validity of profiling as a useful tool.

A very dishonest book. The main character lives a life of bad decisions. He seeks easy success and wealth and falls victim to an evil sect of sex crazed older wealthy victimizers. Surprise! Bad things happen. His reaction, do nothing, blame everyone else and again victimize those that suffered the same abuse he had. Given countless opportunities to right wrongs to make good on the harm he has caused others he turns to religion and of course is sexually abused again. What a shock! From beginning to end he always takes the most self loathing option. His “apology” in the end is shallow at best. This is not a “me to” story, it’s a me, me, me, me story.

I’m a gay man who has been abused and raped. This book is an insult. My life others who have gone what I went through live happy fulfilling lives filled with love.

The family disfunction stories of this book should come as no shock to anyone who has a family, royal or not. At times some these stories feel petty which again is typical in any family. What is the real focus of this book is Harry’s understandable hatred for the British tabloid press. I wish the book had been more detailed in documenting the sins of these publications by naming names and presenting more hard evidence of the malice they indulge in.

For me personally the examination of the British bubble really hit home. You don’t need to be a monarch to experience the stiff upper lip, say nothing, feel nothing mindset so ingrained in British society. I’m 69 years old and have almost no knowledge of who my British grandfather was, because “we just don’t talk about such things”.

I do appreciate Harry’s acknowledgment of Britain’s current racism and history of imperialism and the damage done by both. It’s well beyond time the British be more honest and less romantic about their history.

It would be nice to to see Britain turn a page and move forward instead of always looking back but then again I fear we will only hear more about who exactly made Kate cry… or not.

I was out fifteen years before George was born. Hearing all he, and others, endured is depressing after decades of trying to make things easier for those like George and still all the old pain and suffering persists. I’m still very hopeful, you just have to be.

Perhaps the most pompous writer ever produced! If you can see beyond the authors enormous ego there might be something her but I found him intolerable.

Ignore the obvious, entertain the wacky and blame the entire world. It’s clear from the beginning that this woman created the events that lead to her death. The producers may be squeamish at putting the “blame” with her but they have zero problems blaming the police, the family, the psychiatrists and god knows the ex husband. They are oblivious to the harm her actions caused others. The arson, the accusations of criminal behavior including murder. These things are NOT inconsequential.

A suspension of disbelief is not enough to get you through this book. The storyline is nuts, totally implausible. Dialogue is relentless going on and on and on never making a point. The characters are so rock stupid I found myself rolling my eyes out of their sockets. If you need a few hours of self inflicted torture this would be the book for you.

I have followed and enjoyed the podcast and as a measure you get what you pay for. There is a propensity to use studies as the basis of an argument but the details of the studies are very much on the light side. It’s like a bar chart with no numbers. Pet peeve, after writing a book, going through the edit process and then the recording with a producer why would you not know how to pronounce the name of a city, Ukiah in this case. It’s not a flat pack furniture store.

Lots of speculation that gets elevated to fact on nothing, zero proof is ever presented. For example a few child molesters in Detroit are “exposed”. A few moments later they are elevated to “ring of child molesters” with zero linkage between them. The lack, intentional in my opinion, is infuriating. It’s one graphic yet vague assertions are made about General Motors, sex islands, porn studios, suicide (or was it murder!) and again absolutely no factual basis. A GM executive owns a plane so he must be transporting children as part of a trafficking ring, why else would you own a plane?

The series uses the Candy man and Gacey, real cases, to somehow prop up their baseless idiocy.

Elroy is never easy, he’s no warm and cuddly writer. He’s abrasive, vulgar and crude but always interesting. This book is additionally challenging as it really requires the reader be well versed in Confidential Magazine as well LA in the 1950s and current events of that time. Many reviews are concerned with the narration as well as the alliteration Elroy uses throughout the book. It’s very rapid fire and can be difficult to follow. It’s very evocative of Confidential Magazine which was written in this style. The main character wrote for Confidential and speaks as he writes. If you understand the sometimes obscure references it can be very amusing, if not I can understand a reader’s frustration.
