Historia
Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a normal boy. He would be completely normal if he didn't live in a sprawling graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor of the dead. There are dangers and adventures in the graveyard for a boy. But if Bod leaves the graveyard, then he will come under attack from the man Jack - who has already killed Bod's family…

Historia
In this genre-bending novel, among the first to have launched sci fi into literature, a group of remarkable social outcasts band together for survival and discover that their combined powers render them superhuman. Together, they may represent the next step in evolution - or the final chapter in the history of the human race. As they struggle to find whether they are meant to help humanity or destroy it, Sturgeon explores questions of power and morality, individuality and belonging.

Interesting story, great narrators
Revisado: 01-21-24
I really enjoyed the first two parts of the novel. I didn’t find them at all slow, as did some other reviewers. The ending was a bit of a let-down, but not enough to diminish the pleasure that went before. Both narrators were wonderful.

But when he meets the woman his young cousin Adrian is bent on marrying - the beautiful Deborah Grantham, mistress of her aunt's gaming house - he finds that none of his experience in risk and gambling has prepared him for such a worthy opponent.

Dragged down by the narration
Revisado: 01-21-24
The newer Heyer recordings are very hit or miss. The narrator on this one doesn’t seem to get Georgette Heyer. The text is over-acted and the cadence is jerky, as though the reader lacks the breath to read an entire sentence without breaking it into separate phrases. I’ll be returning this one.

Historia
Mark Gatiss ( Sherlock, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones) reads chilling tales by the unsung master of the classic ghost story: E. F. Benson. There's nothing sinister about a London bus. Nothing supernatural could occur on a busy train platform. There's nothing terrifying about a little caterpillar. And a telephone, what could be scary about that? Don't be frightened of the dark corners of your room. Don't be alarmed by a sudden inexplicable chill.

A long, fruitless slog
Revisado: 10-18-23
This book was short on plot and way too long on internal monologue. I’ve enjoyed earlier books in this series, but I found myself skipping forward frequently without missing anything significant.

Good story almost ruined by narration
Revisado: 10-12-23
I almost gave up on this one. The narrator employs a strange, repetitive cadence on almost every sentence, totally unconnected to what’s being expressed. I’m glad I finished listening because I did enjoy the story.

Different but still great
Revisado: 10-01-23
This one has a different feel. There’s humor, but it has an overall elegiac feel. If the author never gets around to adding to the series, this would be an appropriate final chapter.
As for the narration, I know I’m in the minority, but I prefer Fiona Shaw. I found Lesley Manville’s vocal mannerisms distracting - particularly her explosive consonants.
