Painful to listen to..not believable. Silly, not realistic, just awful! Couldn’t bear to finish.

What an incredible story. First of all, Edward Ball researched down to the smallest details to put together a rich story of what happened during slavery in the Deep South. What a remarkably cleanse this must have been for him and for the lives he touched. All of the participants were incredible. His voice is great and impersonations 👍🏽 listen to the very very end! Bravo!

I love CW Gortner’s writing and the performance was excellent. I latched on to this book immediately. Subsequently, I researched a lot more of the history of the various villas and palaces they describe in the writing. It’s given me even greater interest in learning more of this incredible period of history. Read this for sure!

Bottom line. Story is great, performance is killing me. If it’s a novel about French history—all of these different accents are soooo inaccurate and annoying!

I loved this book! Annette Gordon Reed is a brilliant woman and writer and I wish I’d read this book before her others to understand more of her childhood, family and experiences as a young woman of color in Texas. I also grew up in texas and was never taught about the history of people of color in my home state. A great quick read!
