Good voice actor, story is off the rails
Revisado: 03-27-25
So.. I should probably have written this review for the 3rd book, but I wanted to give it a chance.
This fourth book is more of the same from the third book and onwards, massive power growth that is never enough. Going through this book is like watching a TV/Anime show that thought they would have 10 seasons or more to develop a story, only to find out they only got 3 seasons and are now cramming in as much of the story as they can before time runs out.
We get noble sacrifice after noble sacrifice from characters we hardly know, the power scaling is completely off the scales, but somehow its never enough as the bad guys/girls get whatever power boost they need to make the story as grimdark as possible.
Also a small side note with minor irrelevant spoilers;
Did the author retconn the world lore? First we're told demons are a result from the divine beast hosts severing life and death so they could become immortal.. But, then we're told that there has been many empires before this current empire.. Even some demonic ones. Where did those demons come from if they didnt appear before the divine beast's host messed around?
Overall, I wont get the next book. I'm so tired of the cliff hangers, the powers changing depending on what is needed to keep the story going.

Historia
A part of me wants to run away again. The memory of my death still haunts my dreams. But this is my home now. And I'll be damned if I give it up without a fight. I mean, all I have to do is learn how to navigate xianxia politics and train for battle while simultaneously running my farm and uncovering an ancient cataclysm that apparently destroyed the Azure Hills back in the day. Meanwhile, I'm about to be a father . . . Man, I'm kinda screwed, aren't I? At least I can call in the cavalry—ahem, poultry—to help.

Felt like a filler episode
Revisado: 12-26-24
I really enjoy the Beware of Chicken series, and I was looking forward to seeing where the story was going next. I enjoyed the fact the series is not a "Hurry! We have to get stronger to beat the big baddie! Lets fight constantly to the point it gets tedius" sort of series.
However this.. It just felt like a lot of information we could have gotten over the course of several books, lots of flashbacks, lots of what I'd classify as "filler".. I literally skipped 2 of the flashbacks and I had no issues following the story what so ever.
Its a real shame, but I guess Casualfamer wanted to include these stories so much that he decided to stop the story completely just to tell these little side stories.
Dont get me wrong, the flashbacks are well written, and can be interesting, but they arent interesting enough for me to feel satisfied about them taking up the entirety of the book.

Historia
Fischer has everything he needs in life: blossoming friendships, a menagerie of cute animal companions, a waterfront property with easy access to fishing, and enough coffee to take out a small elephant or a really big dog. Unfortunately, Fischer can’t catch a break. Cosmic forces? Still throwing curveballs. The bigwigs in the capital? Starting to sniff around his business. Cults? Still culting. Plus, awakened beings are washing up on his shores like flotsam after a storm. And worst of all? His coffee guy ghosted him!

Decent book
Revisado: 08-20-24
The book is, as the previous book, decent.
Haylock has an unfortunate issue in his writing that his side characters are infinitely more interesting than the main character. The main character gets everything served on a plate and yet the author still pretends that any time the MC does anything interesting, its due to his own abilities.
So far the MC has been fishing and had a romance with predictable problems and solutions, I skipped most of the chapters the main character was in, because they didnt matter to the story, nor were they interesting.
Frankly, If the author ever releases a story about Barry and turns the MC into a side character. I'd much rather read that.

Another great book in the series
Revisado: 08-20-24
I am not going to lie, I had assumed the series ended with the last book, but I am so incredibly happy it is continuing.
Tulbane is incredible at writing characters that grow, as per usual, we follow John Smith, slob turned investigator turned badass.
If you liked the previous books you'll like this one as well, while some story themes tend to repeat, they arent dull, because each time they happen John has become more confident and competent, so he solves problems both faster and in more interesting ways.

When summoned to a fantastical world and granted powers by a broken System, most freshly minted protagonists would strap on their big-boy boots and get ready for their stats to start climbing. But Fischer isn't like most MCs. In fact, he doesn't want to be a hero at all. Fame? Fortune? Power? He had enough of all that in his old life. Discovering forbidden fishing techniques and petting every cute animal that comes within scritching distance? Now that's a good time.

Decent slice of life.
Revisado: 08-05-24
The book is pretty decent, however it seems the author is better at writing side characters than he is the main character.
Towards the end of the book I started skipping a lot of the story focused on the main character, because, well. Hes just not that interesting. He keeps fishing and fooling around, but its just not that interesting to read about, where as the side characters actually have things going on.
Also, minor spoiler for the next book (Nothing serious, but serious enough for me to contemplate returning it):
The author decided that "Hey, how about we add a romantic interest and we follow their romance AS he fishes?!". Its just not that interesting.. Side characters are running around doing all kinds of things but the main character is just kinda there. Its a true shame.

Did the author get bored?
Revisado: 08-05-24
This book feels a lot like the author was getting bored with the slow pace of the previous books and just wanted to finish up all the loose ends.
The amount of skipping happening in this could likely fill another book.
The book is still good, it just has the overall feel of "I want to do something else, so I am going to finish this series/book as soon as possible."

Historia
On a typical day, on an average train platform, two warring sister goddesses found their avatars. One avatar, the young Yoshi, was swept away to the world of Ephemera to be a great hero of honor, courage, and light. The other, the not-so-young Seiji, was swept away to become a dark lord out to kill or conquer all in his path. But Seiji is in absolutely no mood for that nonsense. It's bad enough that on Earth he was a closed-off, misanthropic grouch with zero patience for other people. Now he's supposed to muster enough of a give-a-damn to lead vile hordes?

Story is good, starts out rough
Revisado: 07-04-24
Honestly, the book is good and the voice actor does a great job, just not at the beginning.
My biggest issue was during the very start of the book where it seems like the voice actor couldnt hold in their glee and just decides to screetch into the mic whenever the main character screams. It made me want to refund the book, but. I stuck with it, and voice actor seemed to mellow out and do a great job through 97% of the book.

A good story to relax to
Revisado: 02-23-24
So, I'll keep this brief;
I tend not to purchase books under 12 hours, however this interested me, so I got it regardless, and frankly. I am very happy that I did.
The story is fun, engaging and something you can put on to just relax to, theres no intrigue or anything like that, just a story about an old man that loves learning new things and has no patience for fools that try to stiffle knowledge.

Historia
The long-awaited sequel to Jake’s Magical Market is finally here—and now with more market! Well, not quite yet. First, Jake has to survive a perilous trek through time if he ever hopes to return home to his friends, his market, and his former world. The last time we saw our intrepid hero, Jake had barely managed to escape being trapped on a dead version of his own world. Using a combination of his new powers, he threw himself backward through time, back to when the god that trapped him first rose to power.

Not for me
Revisado: 02-23-24
Firstly, I'd like to acknowledge the author's commendable decision to replace the previous voice actor. They clearly put thought into it, and the new voice actor made a genuine effort to maintain consistency with the previous performances. Great job on that!
Now, onto the book itself.
The Boring:
I found this book incredibly dull, much like its predecessor. Initially, I attributed the slow pace to world-building, anticipating that subsequent books would offer more engaging plotlines. However, the excessive focus on Jake's inner thoughts and musings became tedious. I ended up skipping approximately three hours of such content and frequently found myself zoning out. It's a shame because the moments when the author has Jake take action are well-executed and interesting. However, the continuous descriptions of mundane details, such as "I saw a village, it was very pretty, it was green, it had trees, and it was nice," add little to the narrative. If the author utilized these descriptions as a narrative device, perhaps to illustrate changes or contrasts in the environment, it would be more impactful. Instead, it reads like unnecessary filler, akin to a student padding out an essay.
The Annoying:
Despite Jake's newfound status as a god, he still struggles in battles, often getting defeated by opponents. This inconsistency is frustrating. One would expect a god to possess unparalleled power, making them virtually invincible to mortals. However, Jake's continued vulnerability undermines the believability of his transformation. It raises questions about the significance of his ascension to godhood and diminishes the sense of awe associated with such a status.
Overall, this book did not resonate with me, which is a shame. I had high hopes for it, especially after the promising conclusion of the first installment, which left me eagerly anticipating the sequel, expecting it to move past the slower segments.

Good story, bad characters
Revisado: 01-27-24
I've enjoyed the previous books in the series, but unfortunately, this one didn't live up to my expectations.
The author seems to be attempting to create drama and evoke emotional situations repeatedly, but these attempts often fall flat. As the series progresses, the lead character becomes increasingly snobbish. At this point, it feels cliché, reminiscent of every noble character who acts disdainfully towards the main character in other stories.
Moreover, the author appears insistent on portraying a supposedly very old and incredibly intelligent character in a way that contradicts their established traits. In certain situations, the character is inexplicably dumbed down, seemingly just to manufacture more drama.
To give an example, without giving away spoilers, when someone warns the main character that "someone close to you is going to do something bad," the character instantly thinks this means that someone PHYSICALLY close to him is going to do something bad Its completely out of character. It's hard to believe that a character who consistently analyzes situations so thoroughly would overlook such a basic interpretation.
Throughout the book, there are similar situations where instead of taking action, the narrative dedicates 2-5 minutes to the character expressing emotions like anger or frustration. This repetitive approach feels forced and has led me to lose interest in finishing the book. Despite having only 1½ hours left, I really dont care how it ends.
