Critical of both sides of American politics, this book calls for us to build, invent, and develop more rather than just say we will. It outlines the mechanisms both parties have used to hamstring construction and innovation through politically motivated legislative barriers. It’s a great assessment of where we’re at and uses solid historical examples of how it can change. Great read!

I was hoping for more information on wood used in the global expansion of Europe and seafaring, but the author spends a large chunk of the book on ancient homo erectus and early humans. It is very informative and makes good points on our relationship with wood as well as insights into modern deforestation in the later chapters. Overall good, was just not what I originally expected.

A fascinating, well written and researched account of a shipwreck during an understudied era of history. A great listen!

Not Just History - An Excellent Book!

This book should be required reading for all history students and those interested in history itself. Kytle and Roberts provide a comprehensive study of the historical roots for our modern understanding of slavery and the Civil War. The book’s structure is an excellent narrative in how we construct the history of specific events (like the slave trade) through our shared memory via individuals who publish on and promote certain ideologies. It is important for historians and everyday readers to consider this when looking at remnants of the past still present in our lives. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this.

Excellent Overview History of the Vikings

This book seamlessly weaves together known historical source material with archaeological data to describe an overview of who the Vikings were. The scale of the book doesn’t allow for detailed accounts of specific events (although the author covers the major points in history), he does a great job in explaining the cultural trajectory of the people through time, almost like an anthropological study. The narration is great and well worth a listen for anyone interested in the Vikings. Definitely adds many different perspectives!

I’m a big fan of Pollan’s work. This book is no exception as he deals with the controversial topic of psychedelics in a reasonable and unbiased manner. His personal anecdotes coupled with the scientific data provide a strong case for his primary argument that psychedelics have the power to unlock aspects of neural cognition that are under appreciated in our modern culture. It was a great listen since Pollan read it himself.

McConaughey is such a great storyteller, that the book is worth listening to just to hear him tell various stories from his life. My favorite is his trip to Mali after Reign of Fire. It’s got some good advice and insights into his career thus far. If you like him as an actor it’s worth the listen.

I genuinely loved this book, however short it was. I always wanted to know more about how coffee influenced history and this have a great cliff notes version of that. It also devolved into a bit of how caffeine effects the body, and what happens when you consume it daily (or multiple times daily..) as I do. It’s a great starter for anyone wanting to learn more about what they’re probably drinking as they read this review at a Starbucks.

In a time where there is a lot going on in regards to racial injustices around the country, this introspective look on how racism impacts black people in the US is well articulated, powerful, and a must read for anyone like me (a white dude) who is trying to gain a better perspective as to why people are protesting.

This is how History novels should be written. A fascinating story that is written in a manner that references primary source material, but reads in a way that makes it impossible to put down. When is the movie coming out????
