Historia
Daughters are the Ang family’s curse. In 1948, civil war ravages the Chinese countryside, but in rural Shandong, the wealthy, landowning Angs are more concerned with their lack of an heir. Hai is the eldest of four girls and spends her days looking after her sisters. Headstrong Di, who is just a year younger, learns to hide in plain sight, and their mother—abused by the family for failing to birth a boy—finds her own small acts of rebellion in the kitchen.

Family as Strength
Revisado: 03-12-25
Despite being a novel, I believe Chung gave us a true picture of the brutality endured and the cultural beliefs still influencing the people today. A beautiful story about a horrendous time.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Exquisite writing
Revisado: 07-10-24
Descriptions of life in Maine at that time were so realistic I wondered how Martha was able to travel to patients etc. her ability to put me in the middle of the birth scenes was extraordinary. And the tender way she was able to describe tragedies was extremely touching.

Just Ok
Revisado: 01-08-19
Back story is very interesting. I go through Grand Central Terminal so I was interested in the history. But the fiction rendition is just Ok.
The narrator is not my cup of tea. Too breathy and stilted.

Eye opening story
Revisado: 02-09-18
While I knew about the Terrible crimes against Jews during WWII, I was unaware of the crimes against the Poles. This story, largely based on fact, opened my eyes. I do wish the narration for Carolyn’s story had been more of a conversation and less of a breathy false act. It caused me to dislike this heroic character for much of the story. The other narrators were wonderful.

Historia
In the National Book Award-winning Let the Great World Spin, Colum McCann thrilled readers with a marvelous high-wire act of fiction that The New York Times Book Review called "an emotional tour de force". Now McCann demonstrates once again why he is one of the most acclaimed and essential authors of his generation with a soaring novel that spans continents, leaps centuries, and unites a cast of deftly rendered characters, both real and imagined.

Be patient.
Revisado: 12-13-16
Where does TransAtlantic rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of my top books.
Any additional comments?
I am so enamored by McCann's ability to turn a phrase, I would probably appreciate anything he wrote. In this case, the historical subject matter, aviation, slavery, Irish peace talks, and the famous personages so beautifully portrayed, captured my interest immediately. As he did with Let the Great World Spin, McCann told disparate stories and then proceeded to tie them together over time. Readers new to McCann's work may need some patience to finally see the point of it all.

Historia
The debut psychological thriller that will forever change the way you look at other people's lives. Every day the same. Rachel takes the same commuter train every morning and night. Every day she rattles down the track, flashes past a stretch of cozy suburban homes, and stops at the signal that allows her to daily watch the same couple breakfasting on their deck. She’s even started to feel like she knows them. Jess and Jason, she calls them. Their life - as she sees it - is perfect. Not unlike the life she recently lost.

Would you try another book from Paula Hawkins and/or the narrators?
Yes from the narrators.
Would you be willing to try another book from Paula Hawkins? Why or why not?
No
Any additional comments?
The premise of the story was intriguing - seeing a crime from the train window. The narrators were wonderful. The characters were all unlikable which is why I did not give it 4 stars. I prefer to like, or at least feel sympathy for, at least one main character.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as the celebrated actor of film, television, and stage. At times suspenseful, at times deeply moving, but always incredibly brave and honest, Not My Father's Son is a powerful story of embracing the best aspects of the past and triumphantly pushing the darkness aside.

Listening to Alan Cummings story, in his words, in his voice, was a gift. Who among us can remember, much less clearly express 40 years later, our deep seated childhood feelings in such a believable and moving way? Kudos Mr Cumming for baring your soul and making it enjoyable besides.

Too wordy
Revisado: 12-12-16
While I have read and usually thoroughly enjoyed DeMille's work, this was an exception. Too much inner musings by the lead character slowed the pace. Also, as an older woman, I was not enamored of the continual sexual innuendos and coarse wording of his maybe 300 unnecessary pages of innermost thoughts. The remaining pages did make for a good storyline and the performance was very skilled.
