Perfect Birthday Gift for a 60-year-old Woman

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-11-10

I turned 60 this year, as does the narrator of this book, so related to her immediately. She says what she thinks and is sometimes crabby in a funny way, yet the process of aging is presented in a very positive light. I keep the discs in my car and am listening to this for I think the third time. I'm not sure a man or a younger woman would enjoy this book, but as a 60-year-old, I found it hilarious!

Intriguing and Very Original

Total
5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 08-11-10

This book can perhaps be described as the opposite of a gritty crime novel. The reader/listener starts out in the normal world, and is convincingly introduced to supernatural happenings, people, and places. I found the story delightfully imaginative and could hardly tear myself away.

Lots of fun

5 out of 5 stars

Revisado: 02-04-10

The story concerns Amelia Peabody, an unmarried woman in the Victorian period, who decides to take a trip to Egypt. If you can imagine a feminist during this time period, you'll have some idea of her adventures. Listening to her argue with an outspoken man she meets is pure delight. This is the first in a series of books about Amelia, but I listened to this one three times before moving on because I couldn't imagine another book being this much fun.

good for midlife

I enjoyed this! The pace is relaxed--there are a lot of flashbacks--but it's appropriate for the story. I suspect the reviewers who were bored were younger than 40. When you send your last child off to college and start wondering who you are, this is the perfect book to read. I became totally engrossed in the narrator's family relationships, sense of place, and forbidden romance.
