Somewhat clunky at first, but a good addition

This title feels like an important expansion in the AKU; establishing some important mechanics for the author's system of magic, and adding Earth as a setting. I can't say that I know who the protagonist is, which is disappointing after thoroughly enjoying 'The Land' and 'God's Eye'; but this may be developed in future titles. Overall: a good addition from a great author.

This story is told mainly from two points of view: a cult member with substance use issues and a neuro-fungal infection; and a clandestine government agent so grizzled and cliché that you can smell the alcohol and loneliness through the narration. This book is essential two hours and change of the former's ramblings and the latter's lamentations, with a couple Lovecraftian staples name dropped for flavor. There are no real stakes, and what could have been a decent build up of suspense is ultimately let down by an unsatisfying conclusion.

If you want quality fiction in the Lovecraftian genre, I would suggest "14" and "The Fold", both by Peter Clines.

With a greater sense of visceral realism, Dr. Kong begins his exploration of the godhood in the Labyrinth worlds. A fantastic, though ocassionally morbid, new title from the author of The Land series.

Decidedly 'meh'

Significant cliches about the south, the usual urban fantasy tropes, a cast of half-developed characters who orbit a marginally interesting protagonist like hollow moons, and generally poor narration. This is a poor man's Sookie Stackhouse.

A good entry in the series, but not my favorite.

(**Spoiler warning**)

I found the sub-plot of the illegitimate American daughter to be a poor fit: often distracting and largely unnecessary. That said, I am well pleased that Andy's character is re-established and shows room for development. Another great book in this series!
