Historia
At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

A story of person growth - a young woman finds herself gradually on a thousand mile backpacking hike
Revisado: 03-25-25
I chose this because the book featured prominently in the 4-episode sequel of Gilmore Girls. I had just watched the entire series and sequel and this book had an impact on the main character figuring out what she wanted.
I love a walk in the woods, but in this memoir, the setting is heavy duty backpacking alone in the deep woods. Scorching desert heat, heavy snow and ice, wild animals… all of it - mostly alone, with little experience and no internet. Listen.

Historia
In December 1606, when they set sail from London for the Virginia coast, the people aboard the three ships anticipated the best. They would establish a British colony, find gold, and discover a water route to Asia. But what awaited them was far different - fire, hunger, sickness, death, even cannibalism. Here, from the noted historian Marshall W. Fishwick, is the dramatic story of Jamestown and the struggle of its leader, Captain John Smith, who, with the help of Pocahontas, daughter of the Algonquian Chief Powhatan, succeeded against all odds.

Unfortunately difficult to follow. Some intriguing history.
Revisado: 01-10-25
As a listen, I found the names and dates a challenge to follow. Perhaps this is much better as a physical book.
For long stretches of listening, I wondered if it was being read by AI. It just sounded very choppy and unnatural. But then there were other sections that sounded nasally and wet, as if the narrator had a cold.
It did give me some interesting basic understanding of the reasons Jamestown came to be, and the brutal conditions the settlers endured to increase the wealth of corporations backed by kings. Sounds remarkably similar to the US of today. I am impressed with the author for allowing us to see that without actually telling us.

Historia
For years, hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was the medically approved way to alleviate menopausal symptoms (ranging from hot flushes to brain fog) and reduce the risk of heart disease, Alzheimer's, and osteoporosis. But when a large study by the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) announced, with national fanfare, that women taking HRT had an increased risk of breast cancer, women were scared off, and the treatment was abandoned.

Life-changing facts and options for the change of life!
Revisado: 12-18-24
This book is both a life changing summary of information for women before, during, and after menopause, it is a journalistic essay setting bad science straight regarding the safety and benefits of HRT. Doctors went like sheep for decades, following a small group’s biased misinterpretation of research to such an extreme that false information became widely accepted as fact and many millions of women were denied treatment that would have reduced their risks of dementia, osteoporosis, and cardiac disease, diabetes, hair loss, weight gain, and earlier death as well as helping them to manage common uncomfortable symptoms of menopause. Time is of the essence to listen to this book and to bring a copy to your doctor.

Relunctantly, Connie moves to the small town and inhabits the crumbling, ancient house, trying to restore it to a semblance of order. Historical novel with a twist
Revisado: 11-16-24
As a Boston native with family roots in Massachusetts back to the 1600s, I thought the story was good. I enjoyed the setting, the characters, and trying to guess how everything would connect and resolve.
There were descriptions that rambled on, seemingly to make the book thicker/longer. Otherwise, I liked the author’s storytelling style.
The narration did tempt me to stop and delete this from my Audible unfinished. I’ve been living in the area over 60 years and I assure you, I have never met a single person with that accent, though I guess one could argue that the narrator was trying to do a female version of Ted Kennedy. Given how difficult it is to put on a Boston accent, I will never understand why audio book publishers and movie executives don’t just hire eastern Massachusetts natives for these roles.
I’m glad I tolerated it, as Ms. Howe writes a very good story.

Solid advice and some very good ideas and positive approach
Revisado: 10-17-24
This book was positive and really has me thinking about how I’m going to make the most of my retirement which starts in a few months. I didn’t learn much new, and it was a bit preach here and there, but it was very good food for thought.
I found the diet an exercise part to be excessive and even a bit misguided in some spots. The main message of that chapter, to take care of our healthy so we can enjoy our retirement, is very much appreciated.
It was a little like a lecture from someone’s granddad in parts, but probably a very valuable lecture for most of us. I thought we went on way too long about not spending our retirement watching TV, but, he’s probably right. Still, I have never seen any of the Marvel movies and I will be watching occasionally in the evenings, once I don’t have to get up at 5:30 AM for work anymore.
All in all, a good and valuable listen!

Historia
The Courage to Be Disliked, already an enormous best seller in Asia with more than 3.5 million copies sold, demonstrates how to unlock the power within yourself to be the person you truly want to be. Using the theories of Alfred Adler, one of the three giants of 20th-century psychology, The Courage to Be Disliked follows an illuminating conversation between a philosopher and a young man. The philosopher explains to his pupil how each of us is able to determine our own life, free from the shackles of past experiences, doubts, and the expectations of others.

The here and now.
Revisado: 09-05-24
I have very limited knowledge of and experience with philosophy, which may be why this book was challenging for me to fully grasp. More importantly, I am, at age 63, much like the young student of Adlerian psychology in the book, I resist the here and now and put much focus on my past and the future.
The message I chose to assign at the end of the book is one of hope and happiness - to live in the here and now, to be of use to others, and to be responsible for my tasks and have confidence that others will be responsible for theirs. I will try it and assign the meaning of my own life.

Historia
Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results.

A great character for todays young women to meet.
Revisado: 01-20-24
I really loved Elizabeth. The story was a good one for understanding the journey of women passionate about science in the decade leading up to the women’s liberation movement, and the debt of gratitude and respect that all career women after them owe. Without the author preaching as such, we remind ourselves to support other women in the workplace. The ending was a sweet gift to the reader, but it was her resilience and ingenuity during her challenges that make the book a great read.

Jill and Derick knew a normal life wasn’t possible for them. As a star on the popular TLC reality show 19 Kids and Counting, Jill grew up in front of viewers who were fascinated by her family’s way of life. She was the responsible, second daughter of Jim Bob and Michelle’s nineteen kids; always with a baby on her hip and happy to wear the modest ankle-length dresses with throat-high necklines.

Outstanding! An inspiring example of courage to speak of and cope with truth.
Revisado: 09-15-23
I applauded Jill’s courage as she told the truth. The story did not seem like an attempt to harm in retaliation, but rather to acknowledge the truth, the remarkable beauty and abundant love of the Duggar family and the deeply flawed, cult-controlled and controlling leader. Jill and Derick have set the bar high for what a functional marriage is and what a tremendous gift a couple can be to each other, facing life together.

It was one of the most searing images of the twentieth century: two young boys, two princes, walking behind their mother’s coffin as the world watched in sorrow—and horror. As Princess Diana was laid to rest, billions wondered what Prince William and Prince Harry must be thinking and feeling—and how their lives would play out from that point on.

Well told, very credible
Revisado: 03-29-23
The royal family treachery that ruined Princess Diana’s life and the treachery of the press that took her life was revisited on Prince Harry and his wife. As I listened, I was sad that his family treated him so poorly, and impressed that he walked away. You’ll never get such wildly and outrageously privileged and covertly narcissistic people like Charles to own his wrongs, but I hope he someday does right by his “spare” son.

An Honest, Compassionate Spiritual Memoir
Revisado: 02-15-23
Jinger lovingly, compassionately disentangles her Christianity and her love of God and her family from false, non-biblical, teachings from the cult leader of her youth. She is very impressive in her ability to tell the truth of the often non-biblical teachings her parents raised her in, without judging or harshly criticizing her parents.
This book is not about her disgraced brother, but he is mentioned in the context of how false religious teachings promote hypocrisy and an attitude in some men that they can do anything they want and their wife and children should support and not question him. If there is a book to be written about how her brother brought down this famous family and hurt people, I would trust Jinger to write it.
