Hard to enjoy
Revisado: 12-19-09
This production is amateurish and very difficult to get into. The sound quality is dreadful, and the acting is stilted. For me, the poor production presented an insuperable barrier to the underlying content.

Historia
In the pantheon of ancient men of letters, none hold a more venerated position than the Roman historian, Tacitus, venerated alike for the accuracy of his chronicles as well as for the superiority of his style. He was a writer of unexcelled genius and consummate skill. But his work fell into oblivion not long after his death, and has come down to us based on the text of a single tattered manuscript from the Middle Ages.

Masterly reading
Revisado: 11-21-09
I've always wanted to read Tacitus but a shortage of free time never seemed to permit it; now, while I'm at work, I get to listen to the most epigrammatic prose in world literature and, what's more, performed by Charlton Griffin, whose lofty narration I find thoroughly mesmerizing. If you're into the grand style, you should like these performances of Tacitus.

Historia
Everything is over for Simon Axler. One of the leading American stage actors of his generation, now in his 60s, he has lost his magic, his talent, and his assurance. His Falstaff and Peer Gynt and Vanya, all his great roles, "are melted into air, into thin air". When he goes on stage he feels like a lunatic and looks like an idiot. His confidence in his powers has drained away; he imagines people laughing at him; he can no longer pretend to be someone else.

Flawed novel but it's worth finishing
Revisado: 11-21-09
If you know the work of Philip Roth you're probably aware of the cringe-inducing sex scenes and the female characters that aren't fully realized. Nontheless, this is a serious and profound book, and I think I will still remember it ten years from now, and want to listen to it again.

Historia
Hamlet is one of the great classics, if not the greatest, of English drama. Set in Denmark, the play recounts how Prince Hamlet exacts revenge on his uncle Claudius, who has murdered Hamlet's father, the King, and then taken the throne and married Gertrude, Hamlet's mother.

I really enjoyed this.
Revisado: 11-21-09
I won't lie: I bought this particular version of Hamlet because of the price, but it turns out to be a very excellent performance. There is no tacky transition music and the actor who performs the title role is good enough that I'm trying to find more of his work, and the rest of the cast performs brilliantly as well. Great stuff.

Sylvestra le Touzel stars as Titania in this delightful comic fantasy, with Samuel West as Lysander, David Threlfall as Theseus, Richard Griffiths as Bottom and Becky Simpson as Puck.

At least it's Shakespeare
Revisado: 11-21-09
I didn't like this performance very much. Scenes are punctuated with terrible synthesizer music and the actors, while polished, aren't very engaged.
On the other hand, it is Shakespeare. That alone makes this worth listening to while at work or on a commute. But you'd be better off trying your luck on a different, hopefully livelier, version of this play; Audible offers several others.
