This novel is for all history enthusiasts. Although this book is a body of WWI historical fiction, it superbly describes the psychology of what it was like for all those who served in the British Army from beginning to the Battle of the Somme.

Loved how the story intertwined the pre and post war exploits of police commissar Gunther. The book was well researched where the author amazingly created a fascinating story that also is informative.
I am saddened by the news of the author’s passing.
Philip Kerr thank you for giving us Bernie Gunther.

This book sits in my top 5!
What other book might you compare With the Old Breed to and why?
Helmet For My Pillow by Robert Lecke, Good Bye Darkness by William Manchester, A Higher Call by Adam Makos and UnBroken by Laura Hillenbrand. Each book depicts a different yet truly unique point of view and perspectives of war which is not glossed over.

Any additional comments?
This book is not a story, rather an accurate account of war at its most basic level - the marine trying to survive beyond the limits of the human condition.

Exceptional historical fiction novel in postwar Berlin!
Revisado: 02-26-17
This is a must read or listen to novel if you have ever wondered how the German people felt, survived and reacted to the Allied occupation during the postwar Berlin. The author has consistently developed an amazing story which intertwines smoothly with his two other novels into the escapades of Captain Reinhardt.
Nobody is better than John Lee to narrate the novel and give each character it's on identity!
I will no doubt be looking forward to the next novel!

Historia
The Irish-American story, with all its twists and triumphs, is told through the improbable life of one man. A dashing young orator during the Great Famine of the 1840s, in which a million of his Irish countrymen died, Thomas Francis Meagher led a failed uprising against British rule, for which he was banished to a Tasmanian prison colony. He escaped and six months later was heralded in the streets of New York - the revolutionary hero, back from the dead, at the dawn of the great Irish immigration to America.

A prodigious autobiography of a truly amazing Irishman!
Revisado: 06-19-16
Thomas Meagher could've taken the easier, softer route of life of a noble Irishman. However, the sacrifices and the burden he freely accepted epitomizes a truly heroic individual who sacrificed himself for a free Ireland Republic. An amazing man who was guided by principles rather than public sentiment. A great book!

Historia
From the perilous ocean crossing to the shared bounty of the first Thanksgiving, the Pilgrim settlement of New England has become enshrined as our most sacred national myth. Yet, as best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick reveals in his spellbinding new book, the true story of the Pilgrims is much more than the well-known tale of piety and sacrifice; it is a 55-year epic that is at once tragic, heroic, exhilarating, and profound.

An honest, no glitter account of the great European migration and the decline of the native Americans
Revisado: 06-03-16
A truly informative and objectively written account of the first 50 or so years with the Puritans landing (eventually) in Plymouth and their relationship with the local native Americans developed, matured and eventually deteriorated into a state of war.
An eye opening book.

Historia
The best-selling author of 20 novels, Philip Kerr has won a devoted following - and there are none more ardent than those who devour his Bernie Gunther series. In 1934, Bernie found himself in Berlin, where he was caught up in intrigue surrounding Hitler, America, and the upcoming Olympiad. Two decades later, Bernie surfaces in Havana. But an old associate has appeared there as well - and might spell trouble of a decidedly deadly nature.

Historia
Hailed by Salman Rushdie as a "brilliantly innovative thriller-writer", Philip Kerr is the creator of taut, gripping, noir-tinged mysteries set in Nazi-era Berlin that are nothing short of spellbinding. The first book of the Berlin Noir trilogy, March Violets introduces listeners to Bernie Gunther, an ex-policeman who thought he'd seen everything on the streets of 1930s Berlin - until he turned freelance and each case he tackled sucked him further into the grisly excesses of Nazi subculture.
