Historia
George Eliot's most ambitious novel is a masterly evocation of diverse lives and changing fortunes in a provincial community. Peopling its landscape are Dorothea Brooke, a young idealist whose search for intellectual fulfillment leads her into a disastrous marriage to the pedantic scholar Casaubon; and the charming but tactless Dr Lydgate, whose marriage to the spendthrift beauty Rosamund and pioneering medical methods threaten to undermine his career.

Intricate knowledge of the human spirit and society, beautifully written. A masterpiece.

It took me a few tries to enter into this story but it was so very much worth trying. I am sorry that it's over, and that wish for more comes after manyyy hours of listening joy. Maureen O'Brien is incredible in her voice acting. Each character has its own voice and timbre. I can't fathom how she does it. Chapeau to Ms. O'Brien!! Don't miss this heady dip into Middlemarch. It's a full bowel of delicious cherries 🍒

Historia
A wonderful tale of a young man’s coming of age, Zorba the Greek has been a classic of world literature since it was first translated into English in 1952 and made into an unforgettable movie with Anthony Quinn. Zorba, an irrepressible, earthy hedonist, sweeps his young disciple along as he wines, dines, and loves his way through a life dedicated to fulfilling his copious appetites. Zorba is irresistible in this charming audio production by veteran narrator George Guidall.

Great story despite old-fashioned Misogyny
Revisado: 04-15-25
At first I wasn't convinced by the narrator but as the story unfolded I became very enamored by his perfect accents and inflections.
The most challenging aspect of this novel, written long ago was the portrayal of women and the female in general. It was quite an adventure to return to what I grew up with. (Yes I'm old, female and was born into a very patriarchal family) I have now mostly overcome these outdated ideas. If you can find a box to put those in (something like Pandora) and continue to absorb the other ideas that are quite beautiful and beautifully written, then you will have a great read/listen. Now I'm going to watch the film with Anthony Quinn. I do miss that Devil-take-all Zorba already. Let's see if the movie holds up.

Historia
It is 1905. Asta and her husband, Rasmus, have come to East London from Denmark with their two little boys. With Rasmus constantly away on business, Asta keeps loneliness and isolation at bay by writing a diary. These diaries, published over 70 years later, reveal themselves to be more than a mere journal. For they seem to hold the key to an unsolved murder and to the mystery of a missing child. It falls to Asta's granddaughter, Ann, to unearth the buried secrets of nearly a century before.

Intricate and addictive
Revisado: 04-02-25
This started out as confusing. As the story unfolds, the placement of characters becomes ever clearer. With some characters, that clarity takes quite awhile. That said, it is an intriguing story and as it developed I found myself more and more enraptured by it. Couldn't put my headphones away, so to speak. Harriet Walter is one of my absolute favorite narrators and she doesn't disappoint here. I very much enjoyed all the accents, especially that of Asta. Also the historical settings give good examples of the women's sphere at the turn of the last century. I highly recommend. The beginning is challenging but it's a very rewarding struggle in the end. Stick with it.

Historia
In 1664, England decided to invade the Dutch-controlled city of New Amsterdam on Manhattan Island. Charles II and his brother, the Duke of York, had dreams of empire, and their archrivals, the Dutch, were in the way. But Richard Nicolls, the military officer who led the English flotilla bent on destruction, changed his strategy once he encountered Peter Stuyvesant, New Netherland’s canny director general.

Richness of Early American History w/all its nooks and crannies.
Revisado: 03-25-25
Yet another great listen authored by R Shorto. It's wonderful to get information that moves past the narrow reading I was taught in the 60's of how America and esp the New York area came about. It makes so much more sense to me as opposed to those pilgrim/turkey cutouts we were offered up as children. Thanks for this, esp now in the turmoil of today's political upheaval. A panoramic knowledge of history is our only way to go forward towards harmony on all levels. We need to know all sides. This one is spot on for me.

To the wider world, Al Pacino exploded onto the scene like a supernova. He landed his first leading role, in The Panic in Needle Park, in 1971, and by 1975, he had starred in four movies—The Godfather and The Godfather Part II, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon—that were not just successes but landmarks in the history of film. Those performances became legendary and changed his life forever. Not since Marlon Brando and James Dean in the late 1950s had an actor landed in the culture with such force.

Such a great voice on all levels. I'm bowled over by the artistry of Pacino's vision. He has inspired me to start painting again after a long and brutal creative block. I can just hear his voice in my studio saying "Just do it, man" Thanks Al, I think I will. And oh the "Don't try" quote is a keeper. If I could hug you I would. 🙏🏼

From the author of the acclaimed history The Island at the Center of the World, an intimate new epic of the American Revolution that reinforces its meaning for today. With America's founding principles being debated today as never before, Russell Shorto looks back to the era in which those principles were forged. Drawing on new sources, he weaves the lives of six people into a seamless narrative that casts fresh light on the range of experience in colonial America on the cusp of revolution.

Revisado: 03-09-25
To understand today you need to know about yesterday. This was so informative and compelling. I already listened to Shorto's book about the origins of Manhattan which was an eye-opener and that led me to this. I have a feeling I'll be listening to all his works. I'm so grateful to Shorto for his very important work, especially as it helps to sort out the enormous confusion that has gripped the US (and the world) today. Read this and think about your choices.

Historia
From Ragtime and Billy Bathgate to The Book of Daniel, World's Fair, and The March, the novels of E. L. Doctorow comprise one of the most substantive achievements of modern American fiction. Now, with Homer & Langley, this master novelist has once again created an unforgettable work. Homer and Langley Collyer are brothers - the one blind and deeply intuitive, the other damaged into madness, or perhaps greatness, by mustard gas in the Great War.

Development of characters
Revisado: 11-26-24
Liked most of this, esp the New York historical moments. Disliked the musical references that felt superficial. As tho trying to appeal to people who pnly vicariously listen to classical music. Not to sound snobbish but the citations of very famous musical pieces could have been done differently. It's really a personal peeve tho and my only semi-negative. Loved the story, the narrator and especially the development towards the end. Heartbreaking and intelligent al at once. This was really good! 👍🏻

Revisado: 11-17-24
As for favorite part? The end section is very rich with thoughts, feelings and insights. It really came together to give us a picture of ourselves both in the life and thinkings of 1872 NYC post civil war and our lives now. Too much to comment here. So much there. Read it! Narrator is excellent, as always.
