Historia
When Collum arrives at Camelot to compete for a place on the Round Table, he quickly discovers that he’s too late: The king died two weeks ago at the Battle of Camlannt. And the survivors aren’t the heroes of legend either, like Lancelot or Gawain. They’re the oddballs of the Round Table, like Sir Palomides, the Saracen Knight, and Sir Dagonet, Arthur’s fool, who was knighted as a joke. They’re joined by Nimue, who was Merlin’s apprentice until she turned on him and buried him under a hill. But it’s up to them to rebuild Camelot in a world that has lost its balance.

Tiresome
Revisado: 09-11-24
I liked his “Magicians” very much, but found these characters underwhelming and the story line tedious.

Historia
A gripping debut thriller based on the real-life experiences of a former French intelligence operative. Alec De Payns is an operative in the secretive Y Division of the DGSE, France’s famed foreign intelligence service. He’s the agent at the sharp end of clandestine missions, responsible for eliminating terror threats and disrupting illegal nuclear and biological weapons programs. The element the missions have in common is danger - danger to de Payns, to his team and to those who stand in his way.

Unlistenable
Revisado: 02-12-24
No idea whether the story is any good. The reading is so mechanically lacking in natural pauses or pace that it is unlistenable.

Historia
Court Gentry is known as The Gray Man—a legend in the covert realm, moving silently from job to job, accomplishing the impossible, and then fading away. And he always hits his target. But there are forces more lethal than Gentry in the world. And in their eyes, Gentry has just outlived his usefulness. Now, he is going to prove that for him, there's no gray area between killing for a living-and killing to stay alive.

Siri would have read this better.

Appalling. The reader regularly seems to lose all interest, and sounds like a machine reading. Also, given that half the action is in France, why chose a reader who can’t fake basic French pronunciation? (Though given the dreary content I guess it’s understandable that he’d tune out a bit…)

Historia
In this blinding debut, Robert Jones Jr blends the lyricism of Toni Morrison with the vivid prose of Zora Neale Hurston to characterise the forceful, enduring bond of love and what happens when brutality threatens the purest form of serenity. The Halifax plantation is known as Empty by the slaves who work it under the pitiless gaze of its overseers and its owner, Massa Paul. Two young enslaved men, Samuel and Isaiah, dwell among the animals they keep in the barn, helping out in the fields when their day is done. But the barn is their haven, a space of radiance and love.

An extraordinary book, powerful, topical, politically rich, and tender. And for once, it was superbly read.

Sleaze by Audible
Revisado: 01-30-21
I'm so sick of Audible/Amazon sleaze. I own this title, having bought it years ago. Would not show up in my library until I'd asked repeatedly, in several ways. Eventually it showed up as something I do in fact own. That was on my phone - but does it show up on my computer? No. Same thing has happened with other titles, often. They are trying to get us to buy things twice. Damned well stop this, Amazon! Or refund everything you've "accidentally" taken back.
