Wasn’t what I was expecting; reminds me of Stephen King
Revisado: 02-04-24
I thought the conceit sounded intriguing, the novel took it in a different direction than I thought it would and I didn’t enjoy it as much as I thought I was going to. I finished it, however, so it held my interest well enough. I have issues when the main characters aren’t likable, specifically in horror? With the exception of the little boy, the characters aren’t ones I enjoyed spending time with, and I thought the husband (who we spend most of our time with) was particularly unlikeable even in flashbacks, before the events of the novel have begun to affect him. I just think the tone often ends up being cruel/mean when you can’t root for the characters in a horror novel or film.
Also *spoiler alert* but there’s violent scenes involving animals and children, and that’s often a dealbreaker for me? So I guess the fact I finished it regardless of that means the writing was good enough to counter that. I did listen to it at 1.2x speed. And as the title says, it reminded me so much of Stephen King’s writing, it felt like an homage.

Historia
On a whim, Grady Kendall applies to work as a live-in caretaker for a luxury property in Hawaiʻi, as far from his small-town Maine life as he can imagine. Within days he's flying out to an estate on remote Hokuloa Road, where he quickly uncovers a dark side to the island’s idyllic reputation: it has long been a place where people vanish without a trace. When a young woman from his flight becomes the next to disappear, Grady is determined—and soon desperate—to figure out what's happened to Jessie, and to all those staring out of the island’s “missing" posters.

Had promise

I enjoyed the author’s shorter work, Wylding Hall. That one left me wanting more, however, this one seemed kind of bloated in comparison. I gave it a good try, but I couldn’t finish it. I do think that Hall is a good writer and I did like hearing about Hawaii, but the setting really outshone the characters and the story. If it were a nonfiction book about Hawaii maybe I’d have been able to finish it! But others may find the characters and story more compelling than I did.

I went into this with high expectations. I initially agreed with a review that had an issue with the narrator, and wasn’t sure if I’d be able to continue the book? But I put it on 1.1 speed, and that helped. As the character (slight spoiler alert, maybe?) undergoes a transformation of sorts in the story, I felt the narrators performance shifted as well. And eventually the performance made 100% sense to me. If you are a fan of this author, and don’t want to read a physical copy, I think it’s worth giving it a chance.

Spooky, short, and fun

Modern documentary style novel. Involves fictional characters from 70's folk music scene staying in a creepy old house. I enjoyed the writing, narration, and production.

A timid spinster in her 50s who still sleeps with teddy bears, Marion does her best to live by John's rules, even if it means turning a blind eye to the noises she hears coming from behind the cellar door...and turning a blind eye to the women's laundry in the hamper that isn't hers. Haunting and well narrated
Revisado: 10-15-17
I think someone who can enjoy a psychological thriller and is interested in true crime, but cannot handle books with a lot of violence, would like this book. As one can probably glean from the plot summary, it's an extremely disturbing story, even if it's from the point of view of the predator's sister and not the predator himself. I thought the narrator did a great job with all the different characters. But know what you're getting into; I thought it was well written but very unsettling.
