I enjoyed this thriller very much! I hope to see more from this author! I have the audible edition so I allowed the book to follow me everywhere. To the laundry room (I live in a senior building!) I am going to hunt up more of your work! Thank you for this book!

Could not keep up with what is actually going on. We begin with one period of time, the 1800's. A mother dies and her child is abandoned and locked by accident )?) in the cellar. We go to modern day where a couple buys a near mansion with a child from a porevious "mariage" whose age fluctuates from nine to pre-teen to teen and whose personality is that of a nagging older child when things do not go her way. Finally, later in the storu, they take on a housekeeper who has a little dog who is continuously referred to as a yapper! The "child" hates the dog on sight and tries to retrain the dog on sight...continuing to scream "Bad dog" and yank the leash of a tiny animal she hardly knows. The original plot is nearly forgotten and the story moves, if we can call it moving, from whine to whine. Sorry, a waste of time.

Writer seems to have no clue about battered women and shelters. The victim became nasty and ungrateful.Turning on those who tried to help. Enough said. Also there are no shelters that take dogs and cats. Narrator is not right for this story.

I cannot say enough "good stuff" about this book. It is so personal to me, being a native of Chicago, an accomplished woman in my seventies, who is sadly, now losing my sight. I am a writer and mentor and teacher and a lot of other people under my one hat, but this story grabbed me and gripped me. I was sad to see it end. So much so that I have contacted the author in hopes of getting more information about memoir writing groups in my own area. I have attempted to start journal groups and writing groups in my own senior building but the interest level has been zero. I do not live in Chicago now, but I feel the need to become active again in doing the things that my two years of waning eyesight, stopped cold! I will be 75 in October and before COVID I was an activities director, office assistant and leader of many groups in my building. I became extremely ill and was unceremoniously "let go" from all my positions. Listening to this remarkable story about this remarkable woman traveling all over Chicago and beyond who talks openly about her strengths and fears and hearing about the way she works with seniors is so uplifting. I wish that she had more audiobooks as I cannot see small print, but THIS book stirred something within me that is great and powerful and inspiring! I am so thankful!

I do enjoy this series but sometimes I get tired of the narrator who makes Opal's voice sound like Eeyore in Winnie The Pooh. Also....senior sleuth or not....why would Essie get so worked up about a mystery lady named Caroline? I am a senior and cannot think of any of my friends or myself who would go to such lengths. Still, the story has it's likable moments and I am a dedicated Essie Cobb dan!

So glad I chose this title and I think the narrator did an excellent job with so many characters to speak for! Towards the end there was a twist I did not expect. Well, I expected it but did not want to believe it could happen!

I did not care for this as a Christmas story or romance at all. The ever increasing vulgar language was distracting. Perhaps someone might enjoy this but its just not for me.

Loaved it! Grisham is BACK!

I so enjoyed this book! I love John Grisham and I love Michael Beck's ability to make you hear individual characters coming from onr mouth. The Guardian reminds me in a small way of The Street Lawyer where we get a glimpse into the hard world of those who want justice for the forgotten people ; I will not get on my soap box because I could go on and on, but this book had me sorry that it ended. When a book does this to me, know it's a good one.

For a while I was backing away from Grisham because some of his recent stories have not had that "heart" wrenching truth that he writes so well. With the Guardian, he has re-emerged at his absolute best! Wish you had more stars! I would fill them all in!
