When Rosie and Penn and their four boys welcome the newest member of their family, no one is surprised it's another baby boy. At least their large, loving, chaotic family knows what to expect. But Claude is not like his brothers. One day he puts on a dress and refuses to take it off. He wants to bring a purse to kindergarten. He wants hair long enough to sit on. When he grows up, Claude says, he wants to be a girl.

If you only read one book this year, make it this one
Revisado: 05-11-23
This book had me sobbing to and from work and I couldn’t wait to get back to it each time. Absolutely stunning insight, beautifully written and well researched. I couldn’t put this one down. Rosie and Penn are parents that all should strive to be. Such a realistic look into their lives, the highs and lows and the lowers with fantastic character development. Worth the read, worth the reflection it will cause you to have. Stellar work.

Ruined by narrators
Revisado: 03-12-23
Save this book for an actual, physical read. People giving the performance any more than two stars is baffling to me. I can’t believe that this was how Jenkins pictured her book being read. Monique’s POV needed someone to bring it to life and this was just not it. I almost gave up were it not for a friend telling me to keep at it. The story itself was compelling and of course you wanted to know why we would hate her, but honestly I just wish I’d read it instead of listened. I ruined it for myself.

Historia
You might ask the obvious question: What do I, a 17-year-old Haitian American from Miami with way too little life experience, have to say about anything? Actually, a lot. Thanks to "the incident" (don’t ask), I’m spending the next two months doing what my school is calling a "spring volunteer immersion project." It’s definitely no vacation. I’m toiling away under the ever-watchful eyes of Tati Estelle at her new nonprofit. And my lean-in queen of a mother is even here to make sure I do things right.

Alaine gets so annoying by the end, but I enjoyed the characters overall. The performance was beautiful.

That VOICE!
Revisado: 12-16-21
The first thing I fell in love with was Sneha Nathan’s voice. Her cadence was perfect, her pronunciation beautiful and her accent absolutely stole the show. Don’t get me wrong, the book in and of itself was stellar and I can’t wait to keep reading about this trio, but her narration was out of this world. I loved every moment of this book. So beautifully written I could picture everything so clearly. I’m dying to learn more about Indian culture now. The PDF is a must read!! Blown away.

Historia
Queenie Jenkins is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. She works at a national newspaper, where she’s constantly forced to compare herself to her white middle-class peers. After a messy breakup from her White long-term boyfriend, Queenie seeks comfort in all the wrong places...including several hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth.

The Performance Makes It
Revisado: 08-07-21
Audibles are all about the performance for me. Shvorne Marks made this book come alive. The voices for each character were so phenomenal I can’t believe one person did them all. She truly made Queenie jump off the page and become a living person who I felt I knew. I cried with her, I laughed with her, and I gripped my steering wheel when she made all of her horrible choices, yelling “Oh Queenie, COME ON!!” Everyone should read this book, it is so so so important and I wish more were out there touching on the mental health issues and the race issues combined with a young woman just trying to make it on her own. Phenomenal.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

Truly captivating
Revisado: 06-21-21
An avid lover of WWII historical fiction, this truly exceeded my expectations. The narrator had me so caught up in this story that I found myself lingering in my car hesitant to leave it behind. (I listen mostly while commuting to and from work.) What a wonderful story of strength and friendship and community love. I sobbed so often that I feared my coworkers would think I was going through something! So beautifully written, beautifully read and just truly a lovely story.

Performance Almost Ruined It
Revisado: 05-31-21
I’m not much for reviews, but was so distracted by this performance that I almost gave up. The story was compelling and a friend said it was great so I stuck to it, but the narrator was so disappointing. She should not narrate books with men speakers, their voices were so horrible I literally groaned out loud every time one spoke for one. The story, however, was interesting and kept me going.
