Jake Adelstein's story is wildly entertaining

I have listened to every one of Jake Adelstein's audiobooks and his presentation style is as compelling as the actual story he is telling. Aside from his personal reminiscences, all of which are shared with the candor and emotion that only a first-person can convey, the historical/factual portions of the story appear to be well researched and contribute valuable context to the story. I would love to spend a long weekend talking with this guy and suspect that would still only touch the surface of his incredibly rich life.

This was a well researched and fascinating story. The presentation, however, was compromised by the presenter’s tendency to swallow words at the end of sentences in what I presume was an attempt to imbue his presentation with a dramatic flair.

Where's our US Grant today???

I was overwhelmed with the character and integrity of Grant after reading this book and was moved to ask where is the equivalent leader in today's world? Although 48 hours in length, this book literally seemed to fly by in a fraction of that time. Mr. Chernow's anecdotes and Mr. Bramhall's narration were both fascinating and entertaining...I would have gladly listened to another 48 hours!

A remarkable memoir by a remarkable doctor!

This memoir by Dr. Hauser reminds one of just how little we frequently know of those whose contributions to society are greatest. His perseverance in trying to identify the myriad mutations that are associated with multiple sclerosis would in and of itself comprise a normal scientist's complete body of work...but, for Dr. Hauser, it was simply one of many key contributions that he has made to understanding this disease. Most inspiring of his work has been his defiance of conventional wisdom to pursue B cells as a target of therapeutic intervention for MS while his contemporaries were focused elsewhere. Those efforts are today benefitting hundreds of thousands of patients. Finally and perhaps most inspiring was to hear this memoir through the words of the author himself from which the listener could sense his modesty, passion and humor directly. if Dr. Hauser's work is not worthy of a Nobel Prize in Medicine, then perhaps he should settle for one in Literature!

Erik Larson’s account of Winston Churchill’s first year as Prime Minister is full of fascinating details and insights that make for truly entertaining consumption. However, John Lee’s pretentious performance in which he routinely “swallows” the last words of key sentences is utterly distracting and annoying and disqualifies my purchasing other titles for which he is the “performer”.

Phil Knight comes across in public as aloof and self-important. However this memoir is one of an introverted, somewhat shy, empathetic person whose commitment to his vision and that of his team is remarkable. I met Phil Knight once and presumed he was a typical narcissistic jerk. After hearing his story, I realize now that he was simply a shy person who was likely uncomfortable in the situation. I wish I read this book before meeting him.

Entertaining story of a possible event in WWII

Whether the event that the book describes actually took place or not is secondary to the established facts that are presented. There is background information that lets the reader better understand the tensions behind launching Operation Overlord and why Stalin was so frustrated with the US and England leading up to that. The story is well told and the narration/narrator easy to understand.

This was too difficult to follow, both because the back and forth between characters but also the presentation which was uneven and at times hard to understand. Plus the story itself was simply over the top unbelievable.

This was an incredibly insightful personal perspective of what it takes to stand up for integrity and the risks/costs that doing so can incur. This young man had to deal with the withering legal threats and expenses that a well capitalized company can muster, not to mention the criticism of his own grandfather, George Shultz, who was blinded by the charm of one of the greatest charlatans of the 21st century. Thanks to his parents and friends, not only did Tyler prevail but he indeed ended up flourishing…one of the rare examples these days of good over evil.

This is an exciting story but the narrator has a habit of dropping/muttering the final words of the sentences, necessitating frequent re-winds at increased volume to figure out what he is trying to say.
