Historia
Before World War II, transparent government was a proud tradition in the United States. In all but the most serious of circumstances, classification, covert operations, and spying were considered deeply un-American. But after the war, the power to decide what could be kept secret proved too tempting to give up. Since then, we have radically departed from that open tradition, allowing intelligence agencies, black sites, and classified laboratories to grow unchecked. Officials insist that only secrecy can keep us safe, but its true costs have gone unacknowledged for too long.

Interesting stuff, but much longer than necessary.
Revisado: 07-31-24
I learned some interesting things and the author makes some good points and observations. But the book was very repetitive, making the same points and observations over and over, while jumping around throughout history. I really didn't want to stop listening, out of fear I'd miss a salient point, but I couldn't wait for it to end.

Should have been "The Politics of Star Trek"
Revisado: 02-26-24
This spent very little time on the "science of Star Trek". Most of the science examination was generic discussion of space, it's exploration, and possibility of life elsewhere in the universe. Unfortunately, the book devolved into political discussion to the point about a third of it was pushing an agenda.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Andy Weir hits it out of the park again. Hard to stop listening to this story. Grabs you and draws you in hard. Ray Porter's narration really brings the story to life.

Incredibly Boring, I couldn't finish it.
Revisado: 03-19-19
This book absolutely put me to sleep. It was convoluted and I kept waiting for a real story to start. My wife had finished it and said it never really went anywhere didn't really end (set up for sequels). I decided not to bother finishing.

Historia
Area X has been cut off from the rest of the continent for decades. Nature has reclaimed the last vestiges of human civilization. The first expedition returned with reports of a pristine, Edenic landscape; all the members of the second expedition committed suicide; the third expedition died in a hail of gunfire as its members turned on one another; the members of the eleventh expedition returned as shadows of their former selves, and within months of their return, all had died of aggressive cancer.

Revisado: 02-18-18
Probably the most boring audiobook I've listened to. My wife, who was listening along in the car, demanded I switch to something else. This story never really seemed to go anywhere and was quite tedious.

Historia
"Houston, we've had a problem here." On the evening of April 13, 1970, the three astronauts aboard Apollo 13 were just hours from the third lunar landing in history. But as they soared through space, two hundred thousand miles from earth, an explosion badly damaged their spacecraft. With compromised engines and failing life-support systems, the crew was in incomparably grave danger.

Not really a story, but detailed technical history
Revisado: 06-20-17
Would you consider the audio edition of Thirteen to be better than the print version?
Don't listen to this expecting something like the drama and storytelling that came with Apollo 13, the movie. This is a relatively dry description of the mechanical details and NASA responses that went on from the time the LOX tank "exploded" to the days following the successful recovery. Despite it's focus on technical details, it provides a fascinating look into the inner workings of Mission Control, the people and positions involved, the intricacies of the mission command, lunar and service modules of the mission, and the thought processes that went on during the mission. It does start and end rather abruptly, but the details are quite interesting. And it's not overly long. Definitely worth the listen.
Would you recommend Thirteen to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes. It's relatively short in time, chock full of history and detail that was too complex to put into a movie or a good storytelling.
Which scene was your favorite?
Not really scenes, just a running history.
Any additional comments?
Listen to this as more of an informative piece, rather than entertainment.

Huge disappointment
Revisado: 06-08-17
Starts out OK and somewhat entertaining but turns out to be a rambling self indulgent mess, especially at the end .I feel like I wasted 2 weeks of my commuting time listening to this. State through it because it was Heinlein but any other writer I probably would have just quit .
