Historia
At the age of 17, Spurgeon became pastor to a handful of believers at Waterbeach in Cambridgeshire, meeting in what had been a dovecote. Within five years, he had become the best-known minister in London. Two years later, following the Sepoy Mutiny, he conducted a service of national humiliation in the Crystal Palace that was attended by 24,000 people. But this volume is far from being a record of human fame and success....

God’s power on display
Revisado: 06-24-23
God worked powerfully through Charles Spurgeon’s preaching to transform lives. The simplicity of His gospel and the attendant power are awesome to behold.

Historia
In 1985 southern Sudan is ravaged by war. Rebels and government forces battle for control, with ordinary people…people like the boy, Salva Dut…caught in the middle. When Salva's village is attacked, he must embark on a harrowing journey that will propel him through horror and heartbreak, across a harsh desert, and into a strange new life. Years later, in contemporary South Sudan, a girl named Nya must walk eight hours a day to fetch water. The walk is grueling, but there is unexpected hope.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 09-05-19
The plight and horrors of the Lost Boys of Sudan is heart-breaking. That anyone can live through this and still have any hope and optimism is amazing. So my critique is not of Salva’s history. It is in the retelling of it—both in written and spoken word.
The two different voice actors (maybe there were more) did a fine job. However, when the characters thought to themselves, their voices were given an echo-y sound. I understand that this was to tell the listener that these words were thought and not spoken. However, the way it came through on my mobile phone/Bluetooth speaker was, well, a bit hokey.
Also, it is all about expectations, right? The description of the book said that the lives of the two main characters intersect in “an astonishing and moving way.” It was obvious to me long before the book ended *how* their lives were going to intersect, I therefore expected something moving and astonishing to happen once they crossed paths. I expected their lives to intertwine, as in an unexpected shared history or family heritage, or maybe one of them held the key to something in the past of the other. Alternatively, maybe they would have some kind of moving story together going forward. <spoiler alert> However, when they finally meet each other, the book abruptly ends just at the place where I thought the story was really going to get going.

Spectacularly entertaining story!
Revisado: 11-04-18
Enjoyable at all levels, adults & children included, and the narrator brings just the right amount of flair and tongue in cheek humor to keep one interested and smiling, sometimes utterly in stitches.

Historia
In his four decades of urban ministry, Robert D. Lupton has experienced firsthand how our good intentions can have unintended, dire consequences. We fly off on mission trips to poverty-stricken villages, hearts full of pity and suitcases bulging with giveaways - trips that one Nicaraguan leader describes as effective only in "turning my people into beggars." In Toxic Charity, Lupton urges individuals, churches, and organizations to step away from these spontaneous, often destructive acts of compassion and toward thoughtful paths to community development.

Offers hope
Revisado: 08-08-18
Having burned out on charity work that went nowhere, this book was a breath of fresh air. The author identifies the reason I burned out and offers a better way. It is possible to truly help the needy!
